We are thinking of going camping in France and beyond, possibly next year, but we have been told our Nebraska XXL is TOO big and won`t be accepted abroad. We visited a tent show today and fell in love with the Outwell Montana 6. Does anyone know if this size tent would be widely accepted abroad? It`s 5.85m x 5.35m.

I have never had any trouble in France with my frame tent which is about 5.6m long and 4.5m wide. I have always had room to park my car on the pitch to the side of the tent so there is room to spare

Wow! its huge isn't it? I've just had a look at the specs. 7.85 m width and 7m length or thereabouts. Our tent is 7 metres long by 4 wide and have a vehicle also 7 m long and 3.5 wide and have had not much hassle finding pitches large enough (although we have been warned that we may have to park the vehicle nearby rather than beside the tent)

I'm sure you'll be OK with the Outwell Montana.

I wonder if the problem with the Nebraska is the legal distance required between tents for fire safety?

Yes Pippa our XXL is huge, but it`s one wonderful tent and we are totally in love with it. It`s our home from home and we are so pleased with it we would prefer to keep to Outwell tents, hence the Montana 6. We like to have plenty of space in the living area and both tents have that.

We had a good look around other tents, but decided that the Montana 6 was THE one we could see ourselves living comfortably in for a couple of weeks. It`s head height throughout and has a large living area with plenty of windows for light. We are just hoping it`s not too big for abroad as we have fallen in love with it and it would make an ideal second/weekend tent for those sites that can`t accomodate our XXL.

Has anyone out there ever camped abroad in this tent or one of the same size?

Pitch size in France is quite good, usually the equal if not better than the UK. One major differenc is that on lots of French sites the pitches are hedged so there is no overlapping. Average size about 100sq mts. Austria/Germany/Holland is generally OK. Italy pitches tend to be smaller so you have to select your site carefully.

Hi David,

thanks for that. Unfortunately I am not that good with figures, so does that mean our XXL at 7.85mL x 7mW would be too big as we have been told or not?

Our tent is 8m x 5m and we have had no trouble booking in France. The site we are going to in the Dordogne this year has an average pitch size of 150m2. Out tent is 40m2. Your tent is 56m2 (ish) so you would still have bags of room. The site in question does pitches up to 200m2.

This is it: http://www.belombrage.com/index_gb.htm The owner Michelle is very friendly. Site is near Sarlat in the Perigord.

I don't think you would have a lot of trouble in France. All of the sites we have stayed on ( over the course of 16 years) have had decent size pitches some were enormous! Its the swiss,/ Italian/ Spanish pitches that tend to be smaller. Perhaps you could phone your chosen site and have a word with them. It would save you the expense of buying another tent! We were in the Lot valley last year and the tent pitches were huge and most had 3 or 4 tents spread all over them there were no problems at all.

Who said the tent was too big?  Did you ask the site you planned to stay on - or just rely on friends' observations?  We've seen some huge tents - and there doesn't seem to be a problem.  Check directly with the sites you plan to stay on - and then you'll be completely reassured before you set off.

We ask campers what size their tents are when they come on here simply so's we can give them a pitch suitable to their needs. There's never been a tent too big nor too small, either here or anywhere that we've camped in France.

Cheers for that folks. We met a couple at a campsite in Allonby and mentioned we were hoping to go to France camping. This couple, who had  Vango Diablo 900 although we don`t know if that is the one they use abroad, said we wouldn`t be able to use our XXL abroad as it is WAY too big . As this couple told us they have camped in France, Italy, Spain, Austria etc, we took them to be well informed and so assumed thay were right and our beloved tent would be too big.

After all the information I have got off this post (Thanks folks ) I will now have a good search for sites we would like to visit and just mail or `phone and ask if they will take our XXL. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and if it means we can take our lovely XXL and not have to fork out more for another tent (even though I have now fell in love with the Monty 6 and may get it eventually for a second/weekend tent) then the cost of the `phone calls will be worth it.

It just goes to show you shouldn`t believe everything you are told!

Yes will do. It ticked all the boxes for what we wanted so we hope we like it. Not going until the 15th August so will have to wait a while for the report!!

we have just decided to buy either an outwell indiana 8 or possibly the 6 and we live in switzerland.  at the camping shop here they didn't reckon there'd be any problem with the size of either model so just to echo what others have said, phone some places to find out if your *BIG* tent will fit maybe?
