Does anyone have a recommendation for a good family campsite in western Austria - Vorarlberg, Tirol or Salzburgerland?  Somewhere that's a bit quieter maybe, not too holiday campy?

I am sure Michael Bird the guru of all things Austrian will be around sometime soon but from memory I know he recommends camping Itter, in the Tyrol.

Lovely area, I have stayed around there many times but not in a caravan and love it.

We stayed at Camping Krismer in Umhausen, just outside Innsbruck in the Tirol in 2001. The walks from the campsite were spectacular, and there is high mountain scenery all around. The couple running the site are young and enthusiastic. I don't think they had a pool, but there was a bar/restaurant in typical Tirolean style. From the site you can get to where the Ice-man Oetzi was found. On the way to Austria we stayed at the camping municipal at Chalons-en-Champagne, and in Germany  just above Lake Constance at Engen, Camping Sonnental which had good facilities and a lovely restaurant with a veranda

Thanks for all these recommendations.  We're keeping a list so the ones we don't make it to now can visit another time and luckily they're within easy reach!  ^

We,re booked into Natterer See as recommended by loads of people here! It looks lovely on their website ....can,t wait to stay there!

It is lovely, but not as quiet as Itter, because there are pitches which are well away from the (can be noisy) swimming pool.
