You might be able to save a bit by picking up an empty cylinder at your local tip. Certainly you can buy abroad, the fittings are international, but personally I would not set off with no means of cooking my first meal. You will want to bring it back with you so will need the space for it anyway.
Theres little difference in price of Campingaz cylinders or refills between uk & France-tho cheaper in Spain--The refill/exchange is about £14 for 907 bottle--the actual bottle about £30 I think--normally pick one up on yer local carboot sale for £3---dont matter how old or rusty it is you can still exchange for full bottle at yer local supplers for the price of a refill---unless of course your flying of going by train--then yer better better may be a Campingaz stove with the disposable cartriges--also available all over Europe--

Just back from a couple of weeks in France and all the supermarkets sold the cylinders. They cost about 47 Euro's in Carefour so maybe cheaper than over here and for a refil it was mostly around 17/19 Euro's. All the supermarkets sell the regulators and hoses as well.
Camping gas was in a lot of stores with the car stuff and not in the shelves with camping products. In some stores you have to hand the bottle back at the reception desk and you get a voucher to give to the checkout. Without it they will want to charge you for the bottle and not an exchange.
