This is a constant source of entertainment for my wife and I.  Us Brits are so prudish sometimes it is laughable.

I am a generously proportioned six footer and I have to say that I look a lot better in the tighties than in my baggy shorts.  They are also a whole lot more comfortable than baggies.  Why do we all get so worried?

We had serious hysterics listening to a group of british teens daring each other to bear their bodies for the first time.  Their French equivalents simply dropped them and dived in! Certainly, no other race seems to have problems with them other than us.  Try Italy, they are even more strict!

Just remember, lads, we all look better in the tighties than in the baggies, and everyone else is in them too.  However, mention speedos to me and that is where I definitely draw the line!!!!

I found the idea of men wanting to swim in baggy shorts so funny I wanted to find out why, so I started this topic in Outdoor Life and General Chat.

I've never worn baggy shorts to swim in and if I could find a site in the UK like Billy's French one I would go. Wearing shorts to swim in is like getting dressed to go to bed!

By the way, I have the 19 stone body of a man 7'6" tall compressed into 5'6", my body's not a temple, it's a rotunda!

I think it's a fashion thing. And speedos don't flatter many men at all. Speaking as a bystander - it's either baggies or nothing at all, guys.

I do agree more of us should lose our prudishness ... but watch out for sunburn!

Ten years ago most men wore Speedos to swim in, didn`t they? It`s only in the past few years that this fashion for swimming in baggy drawers developed. Frankly, I think they`re the equivalent of the old Victorian bloomers and short sleeved ruched top for women.

And on campsite pools it seems the smaller and tighter the better for women, at least the ones with reasonable figures. (And not....) Why is it OK for women to wear six square inches of fabric, and yet men wear a square yard or two?

Val, it's more like 20 I think (doesn't time fly!) And it's a fashion thing that came from surfing. It seems to be the thing for most north European boys & men, not just the Brits I think. And fashion always was different for girls

OH likes to wear 3/4 length "shorts" in the summer and he will swim in them too if I let him. Last year in Ireland he went swimming in them and had to put on his swim shorts afterwards! I don't think he would look very nice in anything tight.

When we went to the South of France last year, my H had to purchase a pair of 'tighties'. He was a bit self concious at first, but soon discovered how comfy and practical they were. Normally baggies take quite a long time to dry after swimming so he was very happy with the quick drying of the tighties.

I have to admit I think he looks a bit of alright in his tighties (even with his little beer belly!) so I'm not complaining.

Roll on South of France this year I say!

Well, this gal often wears board shorts to swim - mind you, that's because as part of my lifeguard training I have to be able to swim in shorts and tow someone as well, so it's a bit like resistance training to swim in them most of the time!

Interesting thread! Peer pressure turned me from tighties to board shorts a few years back but in Italy, Spain and France last year lots and lots of guys were wearing both at once (with the tighties underneath, of course!) and hitting the water. Skins - now that's the real way to go!
