Just saw the new ld lines route newhaven to le havre. Costing out the same route as we have already booked (Portsmouth - le Havre) with ld, it looks like around a £70 saving with the caravan. Does anyone know what its like to get to the port at Newhaven - at Portsmouth you just seem to run right into it from the motorway so it is a really good route. Anyone travelled on this route yet? Hope this helps to break the Brittany Ferries price stranglehold!

I've done the route a couple of times - live 20 mins away from Newhaven and going to Brittany its sensible.
Newhaven is fairly east to get to from the North - M-way/dual carridgeway to Lewes then 5 or 6 miles on good single carriage road.
On the French side, from what I remember its easy to find/get away from the harbour. Theres about 10 miles or so of good single carriageway then you pick up the toll roads.
It would mean an early start from Liverpool to get to the 12 o'clock crossing - we've always done an overnight crossing and spent the day travelling towards le Mans or on the old P and O crossing got the 7am sailing by travelling throught the night - quiet roads - the M6 and M1 so quiet - but shattering the next day. I suppose you coluld find an overnight stop close to le Havre - we've stopped at Blangy - an hour out of le Havre at le Brevedent and the smaller site in the village which has a great restaurant on site - if it stays a cheaper crossing then its a cert for next year. This year we are doing Portsmouth -Le Havre on Sat 21 July - first day of school hols - oh what fun...

Cheers Andy for the advice, Newhaven is definitely on the list for next years crossing. We did think about Newhaven to Dieppe for this year and visit some friends in Belgium and then on to South Germany but that didnt work out so we are heading for the trusty Vendee again - sun ,sea ,sand, and wine for 3 weeks! I hope.
We have booked the New haven/Le Harve route for our holiday in August to Domaine de la Catinière about 30 mins from Le Harve. Any info or advice on the ferry, site or what to do in the area would be much appriciated
We're taking the Portsmouth -> Le Havre sailing at the end of July. I like the overnight crossing, leaves you refreshed the next morning and able to travel a reasonable distance down France without the kids being complete pain in the butts. We are heading to the Loire this summer, so a 3 hr drive the other side for us or thereabouts. On our return leg, we dock in Portsmouth at 21.30 when we intend to drive home to Wales as the roads will be quieter and the kids will sleep in the car.

We used to use Portsmouth, and like you say it is easy to get to, but Newhaven isn't a problem either. It's just so quaint, the dockside is like something from the 1950's lol. Last year we got to Newhaven about 3.30am for an 8am sailing (car trouble so had to just keep going - daren't take any stops) and we just slept in the car for the 4 hours, no problem at all.
When we went, it was Transmanche Ferries so i suppose the system will be updated now, but they even wrote the tickets out by hand - it was so lovely, just like stepping back in time!
