Hi, when i return into Portsmouth next year I'll be towing a caravan and need to drop off mum n kids at Southampton airport. If it was glasgow airport it would be easy, Edinburgh on the other hand, pretty difficult, couldn't pull a caravan through the drop off. Its a tight gate and barrier
Anybody been through this at Southampton?
Thanks
George

I'm a bit twitchy because the ferry docks at 6.45 and the flight is 9am. According to google is 17 mile, no bags to check in. Should be doable.

Southampton airport is actually at Eastleigh and accessible off the M27 I believe. It is a long time since I had to drop anyone off there and security may be a lot tighter now, but as far as I remember it was quite an easy drive in with a turning circle outside the main entrance. I shouldn't think a caravan would have a problem but take a look on Google satellite or street view which may give you an idea.
I've just checked street view for May 2017 and there are no restrictions that I can see as far as the reception drop off area. The airport is well signposted from the M27.
Sorry but the above reply is several years out of date. The main entrance to the terminal is now only accessible to busses and taxis. There are barriers in place. The official drop off point is on the ground floor of the multi storey so obviously no good with a caravan in tow.
The only viable option would be to take the next exit off the roundabout to the airport entrance and drop your passengers by the Mercedes dealership.
You would then have plenty of space to turn but your passengers would have to walk to the terminal which would be about a ten minute walk.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, Edinburgh is the same, they send you through the multi storey. I was thinking maybe a long stay car park, if there was one i could drop them at, they could hop on a shuttle, Hog if the merc garage is the best option
Kids are 4&5, ten minute walk could be tough ;-)
thanks for the advice all

Yes, having checked again you are right. The Mercedes dealership is about as close as I can get on google street view.
The last time I went there I was able to drive right up to the terminal door to drop my daughter off...must be a few years ago now.
Thanks all, Looks like the mercedes garage will be the best option. Thanks all

Dropping off at the train station on the other side of the railway line is also a viable option. Your family can then cross the bridge over to the other side and out to the airport (no ticket required). That would be closer than the Mercedes garage.

Never mind the drop off! The traffic on M27 at that time of day is notorious. Could be too tight a timescale and you're relying on a swift exit from Portsmouth, which is optimistic. I would explore alternative options -if you have any?
Hi Adrian thanks, We have booked the flights and ferry now so. If we miss it, we all do the long drive together. The flights were only £130 (FLYBE to edinburgh) Shirley and 4+5 year old boys. (Last year we came out the tunnel on a saturday night, i dropped them at Gatwick. £90 for all three to travel up to Edinburgh. 9.30pm flight with BA.
Grandad picks them up. No bags to check, boarding pass on phone.)
Its a small airport, i would hope they could be in for about 8 at least, get through security, hop on the flight. Last two times I've came out of Portsmouth, they get you off pretty quick. It's a gamble worth taking, our youngest is not a great traveller. Its like Shreck, after 20 minutes - are we there yet....
Security at airports always fast track (rightly or wrongly) Mums n young kids.
