Hi everyone. Just joined the forum and was curious to hear everyone else's thoughts.
I have just become the proud owner of a caravan, parents have been caravanning for years and I thought it would be a good way to see some more of the country on the weekends etc.
Now the only thing is, is I'm 24, single and it's dawned on me this isn't really the pastime or hobby of someone my age!
What's everyone else's thoughts on this and are there any other younger caravanners out there? Be really interesting to know.
Welcome to the freedom of caravanning. We have just spent almost 2 weeks away with my 21 year old nephew, he has had his own van for a couple of years now, many other caravanners cant work out if he is away in his parents van but no it is his, he has a twin axle nearly new van and his tow car is a Volvo V60 R design, he puts us to shame really.
He has never had any issues with pre judgement but he too was brought up caravanning with my parents (his grandparents) and knows the caravanning etiquette.
I hope you have lots of fun in your van.
My niece and her fella started tent camping around the same time as us, 2012. I think they lasted 2 years before changing to the caravan, and they certainly seem more relaxed now. She's lower 30's, he's still in his 20's, albeit late 20's.
Yes, they usually seem to be the youngest in a caravan when on site, but they certainly don't look or feel "out of place".
I would guess... and I could be wrong here... that one of the main reasons many your age don't go caravanning is that they couldn't afford a caravan (with the necessary car to pull it, of course). Added to that, many parents don't seem to start caravanning until their kids have flown the nest. (I appreciated I'm generalising here, but I bet I'm not far off, when it comes to the majority, if not exactly typical!)
You seem to have the advantage of being able to afford, as well as already knowing it's the sort of hobby for you, having been with your parents.
Good on you, and I hope you have many happy years doing what you enjoy. Oh... and welcome to the forums.
Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
As others have said, many youngsters caravanning and with motorhomes also.
Good on you that you are able to indulge at a young age.
For people that like walking, photography, wildlife etc.
it is a great way to go.
Enjoy your times away and don't forget to leave your reveiws.
Regards,
Greg
I think the driving licence restrictions of 1997 and the thought of having to pay hundreds of pounds to do the B+E licence to be able to go over the 3500 kgs will see less and less youngsters caravanning, it's all about having fun not what sort of unit you have. Enjoy
It's an odd question. If you want to go caravanning then do so. Age is not really relevant. More important is that you understand loading & towing. Ensure your car is matched to caravan & that your licence covers you to drive it. All advice is on here. Ask away if you need to know anything.
Plenty of caravans below B&E licence weight. I passed my test decades before 1997 but I've never needed my B&E licence to tow any caravan I have owned.
I can't see what age in itself has to do with it. Provided you know how to do what you need to do and are mindful of others around you, then what's the issue?
If you've been around caravans all your life you have more experience than me and I'm 58
I'm 35 and we've been caravaning for 10yrs. We used to have a 1980's 12foot 4 berth caravan. Last year we bought a 2yr old bailey unicorn. Love our hobby and always have a trip planned even if it's months away.
We are the earliest 30's and it has not been a problem or sauce of Micky taking.
People on sites have always been super helpful with advice and whenever we are in a place with friends who are camping I can assure you they want to sleep in the caravan rather than the tent!
I think the license, cost of caravan and storage are the main problems.
I think you might be correct in one of your aspects, younger people not having the correct type of licence for towing the majority of caravans. It is a problem we also face at work. The biggest part of our frontline staff are youngsters who do not having pre '97 licence therefore cannot tow our trailers, which creates problems because we only have so many drivers with the appropriate licence. And when we offer training to the younger drivers they are scared to take it it because of the fact they've never towed. With an aging workforce it could become a major issue in a few years.
I'm 24 too, went caravaning with the grandparents when I was little and always loved it! I got a folding camper (pennine pullman) at the beginning of the year and regret not getting one sooner, looking to get a 2 berth caravan next year :)
Married at 21 yrs old and bought our first caravan as well. It was a Sprite Alpine, can't remember the model but it was a four berth with gas lights.
I did get some looks when pulling onto a site. The cloth cap brigade (as it was back then in the early 70's) would all be watching, expecting me to make a hash of reversing onto our pitch.
Fortunately I had helped out on a farm from my early teens and could reverse trailers and machinery without any problems, much to their surprise.
