Hopefully a simple question that you experts will know the answer to like the back of your caravan!

Do any/many insurers cover for parking your caravan on the road?

I went to purchase some caravan insurance and all looked ok until I read the policy wording and it just isn't clear to me at all!

Do you mean you want to park your caravan in road outside your house when it is not in use? Unless it's a private road then local council might object to that & require it to be moved if they get any complaints. I suggest you speak to insurer. When considering any insurance a phone call is always a good idea to clear up any ambiguity.

You first of all need to clarify that the local authority will permit it to be parked in the road. It is not a motor vehicle. You have to have permission before you can even temporary put a builders skip in the road.

Thanks for your replies. I've looked into this extensively and it's not illegal to park your caravan on the road and it is a very grey area.

You must have all the boxes ticked, i.e, well lit area, not obstructing traffic etc. Even then, if someone complains without good reason and just because they can, the council ask you to move, you don't have much of a corner steady to stand on!

So I'm not looking for answers on this matter, just as my questions states, whether insurance will cover caravans when they are parked on the roadside.

A phone call is indeed a good idea, I shall try this!

Oh just to add, I'm not looking for this to be a permanent thing, it was just if on the occasion, my caravan was parked on the roadside for any reason, whether it would be covered or not.

If the caravan is normally parked off-road then it is covered during a journey hitched to car when parked beside the road. It would also be covered unhitched on the road if there was reason to detach it from car ie for breakdown. So presumably it would be covered unhitched outside your house if it was temporary.

Insurance does require some sort of security device to be fitted when caravan is unhitched. I would speak to insurer & ascertain you would have cover if for example caravan was required to be parked in road while you were having building work done.

That's interesting Opensauce.

Good point, I shall do that.
