I have to replace the S Type lead on my caravan. The lead works fine, but the outer casing is split. I am considering making it shorter and using a coiled S Type extension cable.

obviously we cant see just how much cable you have, but if its not dragging then I wouldn't bother,, you need some slack for doing turns or it will just pull out
If cable is ok apart from split outer casing just wind on plastic tape & carry on using it. Other wise yes you could cut it short rewire plug back on & use coiled extention.
I would have thought almost as easy would be to buy a prewired plug on suitable cable length & replace whole cable. usually you can trace it back under front on caravan though the floor & on inside front floor is plastic box with cable wired to connector block. Easy way is to take photo before disconnecting old wiring to help you rewire correctly.
