We are about to purchase a new Coachman caravan with an MTPLM of 1415 and in the brochure it says that a weight plate upgrade is available, taking the MTPLM to 1500, and that to do this you should consult your dealer.
The MTPLM of 1500 is within an 85% match for our tow car, so my questions are: what would be the advantages of a weight plate upgrade, what would this entail, are there any disadvantages and why don't they just put the MTPLM at 1500 in the first place?

Many people need as light a caravan as possible due to car and licence restrictions so the caravan is plated at a low figure to encourage customers. If you are able to upgrade the caravan plate it is worth doing (in my view) because it means you have a higher payload especially if you are likely to overload the caravan at the original plated weight.
We have upgraded our caravan as it is a dealer special and the extra equipment reduced the payload significantly. We got the dealer to do this as part of the deal.
Cost me £50 a couple of years ago from the dealers, just pull off the old plate and stick the new one on.
Worth it for me off the top of my head I think it's an extra 100KG on my van.. you start adding additional batteries, motor movers and the like and it soon mounts up.
I believe there will be no charge if requested at the time of purchase.
its a legal and selling thing.. for people that feel the need it makes the van seem lighter than what it really is but to remain within the law if you want to load the van to its designed all up weight you have to have the plate changed to what it really should be in the first place..
purely my opinion but its a piece of total nonsense.. he he
