I am looking at the route to Ravenglass I know it’s quite a long drive from the M6 . I have been told it’s not a very nice drive but . Is it ok for towing and approximately how long from the M6 are there any stopping places or lay-bys
In 2022 we travelled to Ravenglass from the Scottish borders to get there and exited south via the M6. The road is generally OK but be prepared to slow down if you meet large vehicles as whilst the roads are two way with a line in the middle they are not the widest. Likewise going through villages you will get parked cars. We were in a 6.6 metre motorhome and probably a bit wider, with the wing mirrors, than a car and caravan. I am sure it will be fine but slow! We did find some stopping places but we were going the other way.
It depends which exit you will be taking from the M6.
From the south it will presumably be J36, then the A590 to Greenodd (good roads, mix of single and dual carriageway), right at the roundabout onto the A5092, which becomes the A595 at Grizebeck, and follow the A595 all the way to Ravenglass.
From Greenodd the roads are all single carriageway, with hills, corners and some narrow points. It is fine for towing, at least wide enough for a car and caravan to fit on their own side of the road and not too busy, but you need to take your time and be aware that it can be a tight squeeze in places if you meet a bus or truck coming the other way (doesn’t happen too often).
It is roughly 50 miles from the motorway to Ravenglass and will take you a good hour and a half - as said before, you can’t rush, but the road takes you through some attractive scenery so take your time and enjoy the journey.
There are plenty of lay-bys along the way, by the way.
Incidentally, DO NOT attempt to go via the Corney Fell road (pretty much single track) whatever your SatNav or route finder might say.
We know the route pretty well, so feel free to ask if you have any more questions.
We will probably be going that way in September or October, but staying at one of the 3 CLs near Gosforth. I have my eye on Holmside, anyone know which is best (good views, no trees).
