I am thinking of buying a caravan after not having a tourer for the last 17 years but so much has changed since we had our old Swift Rapide .
There will be only 2 people using the van so the number of berths does not matter .
Just looking for advice on Makes etc . As on looking at the normal places gumtree dealers there seems to be a big difference in prices people want for there vans . I am aware about damp meters , floors etc . So really looking to know what what makes to stay away from and what makes are better build quality .
Thanks any advice would be helpful

I think there's good and bad from all manufacturers. We've got a Bailey, 3rd we've had and not had any problems.

Need to check what you can tow with your car first.

We've got a little Bailey Pursuit 400-2 which is lovely to live in and a doddle to tow. Plenty of room for the two of us.

Personally, I would rather have a smaller van easy to tow than a great leviathan. My towing is very relaxed.

We bought a 2 berth last November, 10 years old but made the mistake of not getting a fixed bed. It's a real pain making the seats up every night. Now we are going to change it. So beware maybe only 2 of you like us but really suggest you look for one of those.

Thanks for the replies . The arguments , debates pros and cons have started . Luckily i have been offer the chance to use a friends Lunar Stellar 2 berth for the weekend . So hopefully this shoukd give us an insight .
Weight is not that much of a problem as i have an Old Rover 75 cdti which is still in very good condition ( glad i kept it ).

hi ssss64, all I can say is that I've been caravanning for over 20 years, had a fixed bed Swift Challenger years ago, decided to go back to a lighter caravan, enjoyed it for a while, got fed up with bed making every night, went back to the fixed bed Bailey, which we have now and all I can say is that it's not as comfortable as the king size bed we have at home and sometimes I resort to sleeping on one of the bench seats at the front so I can stretch out at night. Good thing is that with Bailey and Lunar, fixed bed models are not prohibitively heavy for saloons like yours. Just buy privately and wisely and you should be able to find your ideal caravan eventually.

All makes on the used market can be good or bad. How much and how well they have been used are obviously big factors.
Look at lots and decide what's important to you. We loved the larger end bathroom and didn't want to waste space on a fixed bed. Others will disagree.
You may not think weight is a factor but check. Caravans have got a lot heavier.
Most importantly - make sure it's not damp.

Fixed bed was nice and comfy, however,

We found it cramped,
Meant we had to climb over and disturb each other every time we needed the toilet which can be several times a night for us old 'uns.
Dominated the van meaning we had a cramped living area.

We simply use the front seats as singles with a sleeping bag each.

Each to his own though, down to personal choice.

Its funny the comments you have posted are exactly what we have been debating . Ie fixed bed or not 4 berth or not as i am an early riser ,so a 2 berth my not suit us . I like to get up and have a coffee so the extra seat would be benifial . Thinking we will buy privately due to the big differencein price and use a meter on everything . So it looks like it will depend on whats for sale and its condition so there may have to be compromises .

Buy a van with a fixed island bed, no crawling over to get out of the bed
