Hi all,
Just returned from 5 nights in Southport, to say the weather wasn't good is an understatement, I must admit, sitting in a van watching and listening to the rain pour down, ain't my idea of fun, so my question is what do people do in theses circumstances ??

I hate it, all it ever seems to do is rain in this country. Plenty people dont mind it but I personally despise sitting on a campsite when it's chucking it down. I freely admit to being a fair weather caravanner. Nothing beats sitting outside the van on your chair soaking up the sun as opposed to getting soaked

We dont go. We always check the weather forecast and decide before we set off. Cant see the point of leaving home with its creature comforts just to be sat in a field with the rain pouring down. The only reason for going camping is to enjoy the outdoors.

I must admit I feel the same as both of you, I thought I might as well be at home doing stuff, than stuck in a van for a day and a half ,it put me in a foul mood with the OH.
As it turned out we stayed the full 5 nights, as the Southport site is pretty expensive and managed a trip on the train to Liverpool, with its free museums( handy when the heavens opened ) along the Albert docks and a bike ride on the Thursday before the rain came in😡.
Think in future we will be studying the forecast a little closer as I'm not one for being stuck in the van

I don't like it .
I read , sew, or play games. I would also go to cinema or for a swim in leisure centre. But OH won't do anything . usually says lets go home early . We have lost deposits and nights due to weather . But you can't do much about it .
We were in Bodmin once it rained so hard for days .iin the end I said lets go out . We put coats on and walked . Got very wet . But it's better than just sitting and I hate wandering around shops . We can do that at home .

We go out anyway, a nice drive, visit the town or a museum yes its not easy with the dog but we usually try and take a list of dog friendly places to visit with us.

Go to southern France is what I do. I gave up on UK yrs ago for reasons you allude to. Ok, you can equip yourself with tv & whatever but you can do all that at home. So you either meet the UK weather head on & whatever it throws at you & enjoy it... Are we having fun yet?

....Or just use your caravan for summer hols in France.

It seems a waste of money buying a caravan and only using it for 2 or 3 weeks in July/August, in one particular region of France - you might as well have a cheap package holiday to somewhere warm! As well as going abroad in the summer, lots of caravanners like to have weekends and short breaks in the UK. There are so many lovely places to visit, excellent camp sites - and it doesn't always rain!

Recently the weather has been pretty poor all over Europe, with floods in France and Germany. It could be a sign of things to come, with climate change making it more difficult to rely on good weather anywhere.

We've had our share of wet weather over the years. We always take plenty of things to keep us entertained - books, crosswords, jigsaws, DVD's etc - and visit museums, stately homes and other indoor attractions if it's wet.

First outing in the caravan was to Flookborough, S Lakes. Horrendously wet and soggy. We loved it, it was of course, novel. And we witnessed many awnings totally trashed by the gale force winds. We resolved not to get one. A baptism but not by fire.
Thing about the rain in the UK is that it stops pretty quickly, so we just zip off in the car to wherever, and it's usually dry by then.
It can rain, thunder, at night. Very exciting in the lightning. . .

I quite like foul weather while in a caravan. It's dry, snug & cosy, music is playing and either cards are played or books read. It's all about attitude.

Drying out a soaked awning - not so much.

Beats being in a tent..a four berth tent quickly becomes a 2 berth tent when it never stops raining ..

I quite like a bit of rain. My son reckons that being in a tent at night when it's raining is the best thing about camping.

We go and do stuff anyway. When we were young and foolish it might have been sitting in a bar all day. Nowadays it's more likely to be finding a gallery/museum/whatnot to look round.

We have been in Northern France for three weeks. We have only had four days without rain.

I must admit to sometimes getting a bit peeved when I read this reply - "go to France, that's what we do".   I dare say it's meant with good intentions but most folk don't have the time or money to do so. Many folk only get a week or 2 holiday at a time - not long enough if you have a fair journey down to Dover for starters. Some can only manage weekends. Ok for retirees or people well off in money or time.

If I had the time and cash I would happily go to the South of France for all my holidays as I do agree it would be preferable to sitting in the peeing rain.
