Hi, am planning a trip to Anglesey stopping off for a few days in Bala on route. I was wondering which would be the better road out towards Anglesey towing a caravan, I would probably head for Betws y coed and then take ether the A5 through Snowdonia which is the more direct route or the A470 up to Llandudno and back down the A55. I have driven both these routes many times in the past but not towing a van, could anyone advise me on the best route to tow, i.e which is the less hilly and narrow etc. Thanks, Steve

I would stick to the A5 as that is the route the trucks take. The A470 has a narrow hilly bit before Glan Conwy but nothing impassable. I don't know what the road is like for towing between Bala and the A5 though.

Bala to A5 via A494 is fine. We travelled it in May, twice, as part of our trip to Aberystwyth.

Hi Steve 1961,

Recommended routes for car and caravan can be downloaded from the Caravan Club site "route finder". Site can be accessed by non members.

John.

Yes, as someone who went to school in Bala, I'd second using the A5. Make sure you don't follow satnav, the shortest route to the A5 is via Frongoch and the B4501, and its very narrow!. Go back towards Corwen on the A494 to pick up the A5.
