Our bathroom sink isn't draining. Should we use anything special like Fenwick's Fendox or will Mr Muscle do the job? Just don't want to disintegrate the caravan!
When ours wasn't draining properly, i just pulled out all the usual stuff that gets down pathroom sinks - hair etc! Uck! But it did the trick and water drained away afterwards. I've never put anything down the drain so would be interested too in what other people do.
I used a mini sink plunger from the £1 shop which worked a treat. I didn't realise mine was partly blocked till after 3 years of using the caravan. The cheapest option is better than using chemicals and it's an item that you can keep in the caravan and use it as many times as you need.
When our friends was blocked we got it outside our house and jet washed it through if your unable to do that a very long piece of strong wire with a small loop bent on to the end might work.
We used a bendy drain rod then flushed through with bicarb and vinegar. Just bought a magic snake to keep in the caravan in case it happens again it was £1.99 from Poundstretcher.
WARNING. Many years ago I used caustic soda to unblock a caravan's bathroom waste. Did the trick but it took the colour out of the plastic or fibreglass wash basin.
Chances are theres a 'plug' of, err.. 'muck' blocking the pipe where it joins to the outlet on the side of the van or at the 'Y' piece where it joins into the shower tray or kitchen sink drain. The pipes are a simple push fit so just try reaching under the van and easing the pipe out of the outlet or 'Y' piece. That was exactly the problem I had - the weight of the water in the pipes and sink was enough to shift the blockage once the pipe was pulled out of the 'Y' piece. You could probably replace the entire pipe for less than the cost of a bunch of drain cleaning products...
I had a similar problem this spring with our kitchen sink.We hadn't used the caravan for a good 18 months and I thought perhaps the grease and muck had set in the pipe. A jug of boiling water failed to clear it so I disconnected the pipes under the sink and where they join the outlets under the van and flushed them with a hosepipe. Turned out they were clogged full of dead flies.
`Which` did a comparison test on drain cleaner a while ago, Mr Muscle was the worst (or very nearly) of the lot, and not as effective as just plain old boiling water.
Spend the money on beer instead - you know it makes sense!
