Having a problem understanding where to wire this up to tried connecting to number plate light can't get any power even with light on

Wouldn't you need to wire it to the reversing light so it comes on when you go into reverse?

I have to agree as well as it makes sense that it only needs to be activated when in reverse only.

Thanks Harpmaker already tried this can seem to get power but tested it on the battery all works fine

I presume you have plugged the caravan into the car?
Also probable that you will not get power to the reversing light unless the ignition is on and the car is in reverse.
