Anyone use a tarp with an awning for sunshade? We're hoping the dordogne will be sunny in the summer and wondering about getting a tarp or similar for sun shade assuming our awning doesn't give us shade which will depend on pitching etc.
------------- From tents to trailer tents to a tin tent to an air tent to trailer tent and back to tin tent!
Yes, well I use a sail type sheet extended out from the front of the awning, clipped on the awning's pole hooks and supported by 3 spare poles at the front with guys. Need a deep pitch but they can be found and the siting planned with that in mind. I also run another from the opposite side of the van, all to optimise shading.
Tarp for shade is last resort, really. Try to find a pitch that gives you sun in the morning & shade, rest of day, you need trees & a compass to achieve this.
I dislike shady pitches. For one thing it can mean overhanging trees dripping sap on one's pride & joy, and for another it can mean a rather dark trip if the weather is less good than expected.
From my tenting days I learned that one can always make some shade, especially with a proper camping tarp which weighs next to nothing.
