Whats it like towing down Devons single track lanes, we have a Sterling Europa 6 berth and are thinking of going to putsborough.com but it will be our first major trip from Thame and I dont know what the road are like.
Is there a good common sense way of dealing with oncoming traffic and passing places? Am I overly concerned, Im a confident driver but reversing a caravan up a lane with 2 kids in the back might test me!
In narrow Devon & Cornwall lanes it's the locals that drive like nutters. Tractor drivers don't slow down at all. You could meet vans & trucks, the drivers all doing their day's work, all they need to get past you is an inch. It's your nerves not their's after all.
If you are towing a caravan then for gawd's sake don't panic, don't go against the bank, it's stone under the grass & don't back up without supervision. If you get in a difficult situation then let the other driver sort it out, you will probably be in less of a hurry than them.
It's best to arrive on site in the afternoon, that way you will be less likely to meet another caravan because most leave the site in the morning.
In the end, it's just luck & fate, you are just as likely to have an accident on the motorway coming down & that would be much worse.
Mylesbarn, check availability at putsborough it's one of the most popular sites. a friend of mine who takes his caravan for 2 weeks every year in August has had the same weeks for years, if he gives it up, he loses it, always others who waiting to book up, chances are he wouldn't get the pitch back. Such is the popularity of this area. Croyde is similar.
Both areas are bottlenecks, there are passing places, being a surfing area it is very busy throughout the season.
Have you thought about a site a little inland, and then driving to the beach?
Thanks Opensause & Sandra, we are thinking of putsboroughs farm site rather than the beach site, we like the sound of the area so are keen to visit there or Croyde, any recommendations?
there is a campsite at croyde and a beautiful beach, also saunton sands is amazing for walks and surfing and at braunton there is the best fish and chip shop ever, don't be put off by the queues as it has a fast turnover,we live in devon and frequently use these places and are never disappointed
Those lanes are motorways in Devon. It's all there is. You have a better chance with the van on the back because at least they can see you coming over the hedges.
