I now have a roof mounted Teleco system and found it to be excellent.
Prior to that I had the freestanding Maxview system again excellent but got fed up with assembling and aligning to the satellite with the buzz box , then there was taking apart to put away. I found after a while I had stopped using it , so took the plunge to the roof mounted, self seeking system and I must say it was worth every penny of the cost in my opinion.
WE have a Mecatronic roof mounted system on our motorhome and far,far easier than the freestanding dish we used to use. Only downside is the amount of the investment which is more than 10 times that of a free standing system.
It is a freestanding device so yes you do have to set it up but it has features than simplify that task; it's tripod and its built in "EasyFind" LNB. The latter a traffic light LED that allows you to know at the dish you are on the right satellite, not requiring you to run between dish and TV to check or shout to the other half monitoring the TV. The tripod/dish because when setting you can hover just clear of the ground changing slightly the alignment with the wrist to find where it needs placing.
Performance wise satellite being digital either works or does not so money spent is only for "convenience"; where things do differ is that the dish has to be of adequate size for where you are. This 54 CM dish work this year with the now narrowed throw beam we need to get onto right down to the Dordogne river. As David said it cost a tenth of the money a decent auto system cost, even before you hoist in the fitting cost of a built on unit,to us that £1,350 plus saving could be better spent.
I have a freestanding dish which I have to set up each time and prefer it to having a roof mounted fixed one. The reason is I have seen quite a lot of people with roof top mounted ones having to move the Caravan or Motorhome to get a signal. At least i only have to move the dish.
We use am Avtex TV with a built in satellite tuner and a free standing dish. I set the dish in the approximate direction and then slowly move it according to the strength meter on the TV set up.

Please, where can you find a satellite signal strength meter on the AVTEX TV?
We often use the inbuilt satellite decoder in our TV, but find it a pain in that it has no EPG worthy of mentioning. But I can't find a signal strength meter function in the AVTEX, so would like to know where to look for it.
When you have the TV source set for satellite, in the "satellite set up menu" there should be a signal strength meter at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. The meter stays on for about 5 minutes, more than enough time to tweak the dish into the right position. Hope this helps as I'm no where near the TV at the moment to check the correct procedure.
We have a Satfi RV twin cable unit fitted on the roof of our caravan and it will pick up Sky right down into Spain. We can watch one channel and record another.

Thanks, I will have a look next time I am able to get to look, though I feel I have tried that route.

Did you get it working "right down into Spain" on the new narrowed beam?
I am not a SKY user, but I thought they share the Astra 28.2 East cluster used by Freesatâ„¢? According to VanBitz's website the RV SATFI is only claimed to work on that beam down to Bordeaux.
So can you please tell us which Sky channels you were getting and where down into Spain were you able to get them? Most report needing very much bigger dishes to get the standard UK channels in Spain.
We have a free standing Maxview system with 12v receiver but to be honest are selling it. We wanted for France but since the Astra satellites changed its no good for freesat outside the uk. It's really good in the uk but as we only camp for weekends here it's not worth the hassle. Different maybe if we had sky. As such we get by with freeview through the van aerial or hookup on EHU.
If anybody is interested it's the carry bag, dish, stand, receiver, 20m long cable, flat cable for windows and around 5 sat finders. £50 the lot.

Graeme and others; with the smaller of the Maxview dishes, the 54CM Triax, it should pull in all the main UK signals from Astra 28.2 East cluster down to the Dordogne, in all but heavy thundry weather. My Triax 54 CM dished unit did this year.
Anyway, good buy for somebody.
