Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and the world of campervans etc. I've just bought our first one it's a lovely 1986 VW T25 High Top automatic. One question please. I was driving it yesterday up a pretty steep hill and with my foot to the floor it was only doing 40mph. On the auto should have I put the gear leaver to the number 2 position as opposed to D to give me a bit more pull. Never had an auto so not sure what the 1 and 2 are under the D?
Any help from you kind people would be greatly appreciated.

No, the whole point of the auto is it finds the best gear.

Putting the lever in "2" would lock the box in second, not what you want if it needs to drop to first.

What you have found is the world of VW campervanning operates at a leisurely pace. You just need to adjust your chillout level to suit. Or get a turbo fitted

Explaining further, the 1 & 2 under the D lock the gearbox into those gears - the lowest of however many gears you have (could be 5, 6 or more).

They're not for going uphill - the gearbox will select a low gear automatically: rather they're for going downhill when you will want the braking effect of the engine to help slow down, because the gearbox in these conditions will want to change up, thereby negating any engine braking and leaving the brakes to do all the work and possibly overheat.
