We popped to Salop Leisure today to pick up some gas struts we had ordered. On the way back home we spotted a caravan going onto an island with the heiki sun roof wide open. We couldnt get round to them as were stuck at traffic lights. I hope someone else flashed them to let them know!
------------- Enjoy life while you can, none of us know what's round the corner!
I always flash or try to draw attention if there is a problem with the 'van. A few times I have received abuse from driver for having cheek to try to help!
We were driving along a dual carriageway when we spotted a new van with one of its locker doors open and banging on caravan side. When we stopped at traffic lights, my son (19) wound down window and told driver, he told my son to f*** off!
Some people you just can't help!!
------------- 2026
Various weekends, weather and time permitting
April - Yorkshire and Yorkshire
June - Wiltshire and Oxfordshire
Autumn - North and Scotland
We were at Perran Sands in Cornwall, going in one day a van was on its way out, i flagged him down and said your roof is open, he said OK then carried on out of the site with it open.
Another time on the M6 south we hit traffic as we approached Stoke, I was on the inside lane and a caravan came past us, i spotted the S plug dragging on the floor and partially worn away.
It was one of those times where my lane started to move and nearly caught them then they got a bit further up.
Eventually my lane move a bit more and i got alongside and said your lead is dragging on the floor.
He went a bit further down and i thought he was going to ignore it, but he then pulled over.
Yes i have had the same problems of abuse when trying to help, so many times over the years i now tend not to bother.
being told to f/off on several occasions does not encourage you to try to help.
But just out of interest the last two on the A30 where, an open large heiki sun roof and an open top box with its contents falling out,
Each time being told to f/off with lots of hand gestures.
Don't harm roof vent to be left open while driving unless its 20yrs old with brittle plastic, then it might break off. Obviously not good if it rains but caravanner may have been wanting to clear smell from caravan. Easy enough to forget to close it though, done it meself.
I stopped in a layby on the A55 for a break and to stretch my legs a bit.. there were three roof vents at the side of the road there. On reflection, I should have picked them up and sold them on ebay! :) I've also tried to warn people that their roof vents are open with no success.
What a totally negative thread, some may have stopped them and they were mightily grateful, there are nice people out there too. I was having a nice day.
It was a £120 learning experience for me driving in France with the sunroof on the van open. It graunched the blind and fly screen for said sunroof and the repairs cost the aforementioned.
We live just further down the A6 from the section that has overhanging trees through a glade, and we regularly see caravans that are travelling up to, or returning from the Peak district with their roof vents fully open, or locker doors flapping in the breeze.
Several times l have pipped and pointed to the problem, only to be given rude gestures for my efforts, resulting in a regular heap of debris that have been torn off high vehicles that have ignored the warning being accumulated on the roadside.
A couple of months ago, we were following a caravan along the M18 who had his battery locker open, he hit a bump going through the roadworks at quite some speed, and out fell his battery, bumping along the side of the caravan dangling on its connectors before it finally fell off. We were one car back from him, so not much we could do to warn him, luckily the battery ended up on the hardshoulder and not in the path of oncomming traffic.
