I bought my caravan 3 years ago and bought a brand new awning with it.
For reasons I can't go into we have only been away 3 times with this caravan once a year for our annual holiday and every time I've put the awning up I've had trouble with the sides as the windows aren't level from side to side and it looks as if the awning is too big.
I've never had chance to check the size until now, and it's a size 1040 Apache Westminster. I've checked the specs for my 2004 sterling moonstone and the rail size is 952cm,
as I took the awning from the dealer in good faith do you think I might have something to use against the dealer to get the right size?

Well for arguments sake, if the matter was dealt with in court and your comment was that you purchased the awning 3 years ago, erected it three times and never had chance to check the size till now, I'm sure a judge would dismiss the case on the grounds that there have been several missed opportunities to determine that the awning was the incorrect size.
If the awning looked a poor fit the first time it was erected and then you contacted the dealer and questioned the size then you would have had a strong case for exchange but unfortunately due to the time factor involved you will find that the law in terms of the sale of goods act would be long overdue so basically you don't have a case against the dealer.
The only way forward would be request a part exchange or to sell the awning as a used item and then buy the correct size you need.
No, its far to diwn the line now, the dealer will not entertain you, your only recourse would be through court and I think the court would say that you should have sort rectification alot sooner.
Why don't you just sell on the apache and buy one to fit your van correctly? The apache will sell easily being the correct size for a lot of twin axles.
Approach the dealer politely and inform them that the awning given to you is the wrong szie and you have only just found out.
If the caravan and the awning were sold as a package deal then the dealer should have supplied the correct size and you have chance of doing some negotition with the dealer as the Sale of Goods Act covers you for six years however it will be tricky and you will need to rely on the goodwill of the dealer to give you a good discount on a newer awning.
Being nice and polite may help your case.

I have approached the dealer we bought the caravan and awning from and explained the situation.
The have agreed to replace the awning for one of the correct size.
