Having seen the "Any other Eriba Owners" thread I wondered if anyone else still has a Silverline Nova or am I unique?

If there are others, is there an owners club for these babies?

Hello! I am thinking about buying one- any advice or tips?
I am a complete caravan novice and would appreciate any help I can get.....

Will post again if I succumb to the lure of the lovely little 'van I have my eye on...

I've always liked the look of these little caravans but not got one. What happened to Silverline, when did they cease trading? Are they solidly built, many damp problems? Difficult finding out information on caravans that are no longer made.

Silverline ceased trading about 1991/2, shame really because they are nice lightweight vans, but they went the way of most of the old manufacturers at that time. I don't think they had any particular damp problems but because any thing available now is pre 1991 there is always the chance of some damp like any caravan 16 years plus in age.

They were all slimline vans, the Nova being 10ft long & 5ft 7" wide with a Max weight of 700kg  and the Pegasus was 12 or 14ft long & 6ft 6" wide with a Max weight of 900kg.

The nova was ideal for a small towcar, perhaps this size will become popular again with the rising cost of travel.

Hi,

I bought mine in 2003, privately. I bought it from a family of four who towed it with an 1100cc car. I had a 1.5TD Diesel Corsa at the time and wanted something that it would tow easily for comfortable accomodation at festivals.

What a beautiful little caravan it is though I have to be honest it is fine for just me without the awning which came with it but when Mrs Nova goes with me there isn't really room for two of us in it to move about, unless the awning is up.

I towed it over 300 miles on my first outing with it to a festival with a pal and was surprised to note that we were doing 85mph at one point so had to slow down quickly but steadily to a safer speed.

The only problem I had on that trip was that after 295 miles one of the tyres blew out, but as it had a spare I was able to put it on and continue, then came a problem - I tried next day to buy a new tyre for it only to find that 10 inch tyres were no longer available at all the major tyre houses, but finally found an independant who had a couple in as they are fitted on the original Minis, so was able to have a spare again for the return journey.

Another problem I had was when I drove to a festival on my own in torrential rain and arrived to find that one of the roof lights had disappeared. I cured this temporarily by putting my umbrella up through the hole then opening it. It worked a treat. I repaired it temporarily next day with 2 sheets of plywood and a bolt with one sheet on the outside and one on the inside with the bolt and nut through the middle. I later bought a replacement skylight which I was able to fit myself for around £30.

The van came with an original Silverline glossy brochure showing all the models available and I still have it, as I still have the caravan, but have swapped the Corsa for a 1.9Tdi Passat Estate which I have just had a towbar fitted on ready for this year's festivals, but have not had the van out yet. I will photocopy the brochure and send it if you want it, but you'll need to send me your address.

The van is a full caravan in miniature with a separate toilet and washroom, a rear kitchen, 2 beds, a fridge, lots of cupboard space, mains and 12volt lighting, calor gas stove and grill etc. I love it, and I've had lots of help and suggestions from other members  on here when I've encountered the odd problem.

I didn't pay a lot for it and didn't check it with a damp meter when I bought it in February when it was snowing, but did check it visually and didn't see any obvious damp, but have rebuilt the interior of a Thomson Glenbervie we had for 25 years as a DIY job, reasonably successfully, so don't feel phased if I do find any damp in the future.

My advice is to go for it, but do have it checked with a damp meter first - there's plenty of threads on here about that!

Nova.

Hello, I bought a Nova Princess a couple of years ago, renewed the interior upholstery which was a bit threadbare under neath, in spite of the previous owner saying it hdn't been used much. painted the facings of the cupboards where the very thin veneer had started to almost wipe off, and generally tidy the van up. The cassette toilet packed in last year and I could not find parts or a replacement to fit the small space it had occupied. I bought a porta potti and fitted in the space and renewed the bits of trim where the cassette was with cushion floor material. I serviced the van this year mechanically, and found the chassis to be almost perfect, the van does not leak but if buying one a reseal would make sure. The van in use is adequate to sleep in forming a big double bed, the cooking we do in the awning and always have done in caravans it stops the smells permeating  the van.We have used the shower and heating which again is adequate. We are going away at the end of the month so looking forward to using the van again. It is 5'6" wide so is easy to tow and store .  Nice to look at and a bit quirky in its concept almost as if face on it has a bit missing ,but looks normal side on. Good luck in buying and using

Hello all and thanks for the advice and ideas... I am now the proud owner of the lovely little Silverline Nova..I have yet to try everything out to see if it's all in working order but it all looks great so far! Very impressed at the space inside for such a tiny van on the outside.

We are going to give it a good clean at the weekend, get the electrics and gas checked out then give her a whirl for a short test trip. I will take and post some photos once she is gleaming and has some glorious Northumbrian coastline as a backdrop.. has anyone else any photos of a nova, inside or out?

Hi LouiseCecelia,

At least I'm no longer Unique as an owner of a Silverline.

Yes I've got a few photos of mine but not sure how to upload them - can you advise me on this?

Hello!

I have no idea at all- but I just looked at 'all forums' and then the 'help' section where I found detailed instructions about how to post photos- I will read it thoroughly when I have some pictures to share.

Cheers

We've had our Silverline Nova for about 14 years now and it's getting ready for some work. It is the only van we could fit down the side of the house other than an Eriba Puck so we'll have to keep an eye out for one of those.

We have recently purchased a Nova. We think she is great. Small and compact. Everything we need to hand. She has come with an awning to give that extra space. We find the toilet cubicle a little tight! but its a good area for extra storage. i can't believe the amount of storage space in her!! had four trips out and now just finding out the best place for everything. We bought some new black out blinds and the rails for the curtains need replacing but other than that she seems pefect!

Look out for the flying pig on a site near you!
