We are looking to bring our van to store in our garden which has a grassed area which will be ideal, rather than removing the grass we would like to use a reinforcing mesh so that when we move the van the area of garden still looks ok. Is there a mesh that we can hammer in to the existing grass or will we have to lift and reseed to grass in to the mesh.
we have a patch of grass at side of house which has a piece of grass protector fitted over to park cars.if you leave a car on it for any length of time it kills the grass and it looks very patchy. ps. i see in your profile that you tow with a merc vito, how capable is it, my caravan is 1800 kgs
I am sure that your local garden centre could advise you on your mesh but I think the grass will yellow & die if you leave the van on the same spot for long periods.
We live on a corner plot and keep ours on the side lawn. We put two concrete runs for ease of moving and all the grass has now gone from under the van so probably not worth the cost and effort of putting down any reinforcing material. As fleck2 says, possibly best to put down some hard landscaping.
When I parked mine on grass I just put paving slabs in position for wheels & steadies & backed it on. No point in doing anything else, you will have bare earth & weeds underneath caravan whatever you do. Now I have had front block paved its miles better & caravan does not get covered in green mould as it tends to do when parked on grass.
Does it matter if your grass dies under the van, you will only see it when the van isn't there, which is when you will be away in your van anyway. Its like covering up a chipped table with a table cloth, it really wouldn't bother me.💠
Don't really want to convert to hard landscaping and will put up with the dying grass as we can turf over it if we ever decide to retire from the van. Thinking that a few slabs under the wheels are probably best. Thanks folks. Diesel Steve the Vito tows well, off the top of my head I think the van is approx. 1600kg and the Vito is an automatic, thought this would be an issue at first but had no problems so far. Wouldn't fancy towing it up the Alps though.
Yes thats what I did when I parked mine on grass. I measured up first to get slabs in correct position under each wheel, then placed a slab under each steady, under jockey wheel & also a couple by the door. Worked well enough. Use a strimmer to cut grass around slabs & it looks tidy enough.
