The back cushions on my van which also form part of the bed are worn and need new foam. I was watching the caravan channel and they explained that you should use a softer foam for back cushions and firm for the base. This makes sense as you don't want to be resting your back on firm cushions when sitting in van. However because I use mine for both sitting and sleeping what do I ask the upholsterer to use?. The cushions I am on about form the middle section of the bed so need to be supportive to sleep on but comfy for sitting and relaxing.
I used quite firm foam when I replaced mine as they are also used to form the bed when sleeping as the base foam is also quite firm.
I softened the back rest by using some soft, squishy cushions to make it more comfortable when in seat mode.
All my vans have had same foam in seat and back rest, as you say you turn all into a bed, you don't want to fall down a soft bit when sleeping.
my OH always buys scatter cushions to match in new to us vans or goes total contrast if cant find same colours.
we have found by trial and error over the years that well filled scatter cushions slight firm which keep there shape are the best for comfort and wear.
we tend now just to buy new covers and not complete cushions.
but most new vans come with a few matching scatter cushions now days.
