Hi,recently we bought a bailey ranger 520/4 year 2000,the 2nd time we used it we hook to to the electric as usual, after a short time we noticed a burning smell inside the van,we located it to the battery charger under the front bunks,I unplugged it and left it off for the rest of the weekend,at this stage we only had power to the fridge, sockets and thurma heater,on getting home I have changed all the fuses so now everything works when running off 230volts,when I filck it over to 12 volts I have just the same sockets, fridge and heater working, battery charger shows everything is working?😣
Hi,I see,new to this caravan business, the question is that in a few weeks we are going to a meet which is overnight with no electric,so we will just be running from the battery and gas,I just presumed that all the lights would work when running from the battery, hope this makes sense!
Right,I had the van at home connected to the electric charging the battery,it's been charging for 24hrs,I have just unplugged it from the mains and flicked it over to 12 v,there is a green light on the fuse box saying the battery condition is good, when I switch lights on etc, there is nothing working?
You need to check battery condition with volt meter, fully charged should read about 12.8v & it should hold that charge if disconnected from caravan, if it drops right down after a few hrs then battery has had it.
If your charger previously smelt of burning then it is probably faulty & could well have overcharged & ruined battery. If battery voltage is down try charging it with separate charger & see if it holds charge. Provided battery is fully charged then taps & 12v lighting should work. If you think caravan charger is faulty do not plug caravan into mains but with good fully charged battery you can do a few nights without ehu.
Your fridge is not run from the battery only from mains or gas so if you are not plugged into mains ehu fridge will have to be run on gas.
My 1999 Ranger had a small switch on the front of the electric panel which turned the 12V on and off. All lights should work except the 2 mains lights.
