we treated ourseleves to a new sunncamp 390 in the belief that it would save the near divorce arguments we have each time the awning gets put up. this was our first outing using it, the instructions were basic to say the least! the awning came with 4 collapsable poles and several metal ones. the instructions only detailed where to put the 4 black foldable ones with no mention of the others! So where do all the other poles go?! also did everyone manage to achieve a nice straight reasonably tight fit against the side of the van? we did on one end but not the other. and am considering attaching some velcro to help do this. Any advice or pointers much appreciated!
hi we have one of those and it does save on time weight and a devorse. the poles you have create two centre poles that make the awning riged. idf you look inside the awning you have two black slips either side to slot them in one ole is a little bigger than the other but once yo get them in you tighten them up so the awnig stays up on its own! one hot weekend we only needed to put in a few pegs and the guyropes!
Peg the awning as far as you can under the van to get a tight fit, not easy on a hard standing but we tend to bungee it to the chassis and hold the bungee down ith a breeze block.
We had 14 in our Ultima 390 this week in torrential rain and didn't leak once. This is an amazing porch. The two poles as ellis9905 says goes from side to side above the windows. You should see tying strings hanging down for these to be kept in place. All the aluminium poles which have a bent hook comming out of them go together to form poles for a canopy if you wish to open one of the front sections. You get one spare black fibreglass pole just incase you break one of the origonals.
mickeym does the ultima 390 cover one of your windows slightly, i also have the bailey ranger 550/6 and have just bought one and any tips would be great.colin
Hi, in answer to your question above, it does not cover up one of the windows. We also have a bailey Ranger 550/6. As you can see from the previous links, this is a great porch awning, but a bit of a nightmare to get a nice flush fit. Hopefully after reading all the previous links, next time we go away we'll crack it.
Sorry Shami, went off on holiday and lost the thread. On the 550/6 the porch starts just where the roof flattens out ar the rear and finishes about 4 inches short of the front side window. Best to pull the sides tight to the van to see where they end up before starting to peg.
thanks mickeym the ultima should be here tomorrow from awnings direct great price £161.00 plus £3.95postage. Going to lickhill manor on friday for two nights to try it out.
we have found that we manage tp put it up better each time, the last time (5th), we managed to get it to fit perfectly, no gaps at the side, and no slack in the roof, peg both sides under the van 1st, the put in poles etc. we found this the best way, also try to get a level pitch.
good luck, great awning, you MUST seal the strip that goes in the awning rail, or it will leak like a sieve, we were supplied with some with the awning and purchased it from awnings direct.
We have the Ultima 260, which is the smaller version of the 390, and we too have had trouble getting a tight fit against the van on one side, the other side was lovely and straight. We now think the problem was that the ground sloped from front to back which meant that the poles were not paralel.
we had that problem as above put it up for the first time over the weekend recktofied it by digging a hole to put the tent peg in and it tightened up ( were on seasonal pitch so the grass will grow back soon ) to match the other side was only slightly raised you could hardly notice
took us a while to figure out what the problem was !!! one side went in perfect first time .
We have a bailey ranger 2006 550/6, with a Sunncamp Ultima 390 -
The awning is a fab size and doesnt cover the window - but it is on the line.
This is a perfect awning for anyone wanting a very lightweight awning plus quick and easy to put up. We put it up in the pitch dark and still managed to get it up in 20 minutes. Although next time we will know what we are doing (and will be daylight) and will probably get it up in half that time.
We had ours up in very windy weather and bad rain. There was no problem and no leaks.
The trouble with the 390/290 awning & bailey vans is that the height of the van awning rail is to low. I mesured the height of the van & found that the height was less than that recommended by sunncamp so I cut off 2inches from the black poles & now find that it fits much better I know it sound wrong but it does work .
If you bring the pole ends in closer to the van it increases the height of the curve in the pole so the this in turn still pulles the sides away from the van by shortening the poles it allowes the poles to be brought in towards the van allowing the sides to close against the van. this is why if you are pitched on a slope one end fits ok but the other doesnt
