Most light problems are caused by a bad earth, it can do the most unexpected things.

If you happen to experience this again, for the cost of new fittings I would suggest you replace the plug on the van and the socket on the car.
The 12N/S fittings aren't the best and can suffer over the years, but cheap enough to replace if problems persist.

I remember years ago using an aerosol called Triflow which did not melt the plastic on hook up connections as WD40 does if used often enough.
It was expensive but did a good job, not sure if still available and if still as expensive.
I got a freebie from a rep visiting where I worked at the time..

Like the man said, our 12n plug had an iffy connector on the car. 12v according to the meter but when the socket from the caravan was attached it pushed the pin back and lost contact - no brake lights on the caravan. Guess what tomorrows job is?
