Hi all, I am looking for some advice on wireless reversing cameras, I want to fit a camera to the rear of my caravan, the total length is around 10meters car dashboard to rear of van, must not be hard wired to car, has to be totally cable free between car and van as car is a leased car, have looked at so many so called wireless cameras that need cable connection between monitor and cameras, head is spinning.. I need a simple system ( monitor plugs in to cigarette lighter socket, and camera connected to the reverse light of van). Any information or recommendations from reversing camera users will be very much appreciated.

I have a wired system which does not need any wiring to car electrics.
In the car is a screen which clips onto the interior mirror. Power to this comes from the cigar socket.
This screen has a connection to a wire through and out of my car boot.
This wire connects to a 10 metre extension wire through the front window of the caravan and out of the rear bedroom ceiling window to the camera.
Power to the camera is supplied from a wire through the same window to a 12v socket in the caravan bedroom.
Probably not what you are looking for but a possible alternative. No screws, no interference with car or caravan electrics. The camera is stuck on.
I love my rear camera, it is great when towing or reversing.
Hi fredireco,and Grampian91, thanks for your solution, did consider wiring through car, but as stated it is a lease car and I do not wish to tamper with internal wiring, it’s a hassle running cables under carpet or facia panels, passed airbag wiring, and having to remove cables when car is returned, cables on floor of car would get damaged by clumsy grandkids, and I like everything neat and tidally tucked away out of harms way, bought a Maplins wireless reversing kit about £100 a few years ago, overpriced crap, worked well for 14month and started to give very poor picture, now its like watching TV without aerial, not be buying camera from there again, as they say “once bitten”. Hunt is on for a fairly good system, so hopefully you good members out there are able to help.

I've used parkingcamereas.com before but for a wired system, which is still going well. They do dedicated wireless kits for caravans, but they aren't cheap. Link
Hi brianconway, looked at the trailervision system in my search, looks pretty good in your video and no interference, it could be a good contender, I can see why you fitted one, very nice couple of horses, they certainly warrant the expense. Thanks for that.

I paid about £35 for mine. Works great. I don't run it under carpets etc. I only use it when towing so the wire runs through the car. I take it all down when finished towing, except the camera and put everything in a box until needed.

Hi fredirico, That would have been an option if it was not for the grandsons, who have extremely big feet and seam to catch everything, and drop their stuff on the cable, no matter where it is run(in the car or the tailgate and damage the cable and cause a short, so cable is out). One obvious solution is, I could run cable through car and stop taking the grandsons with me, a bit extreme as they love going away wee caravan trips. So only option is totally cable free between camera and monitor. Initially I was going to use camera for reversing only, but after seeing video of camera running continuously, may run that way and wire into caravan’s electrics via the live feed through 12n socket, I now have a better idea of what I want, wireless kit with bigger monitor 7”, and camera wired to caravan for continuous running while connected to car, this is where all good members can help me. Which one have they used, how good are they.

All you need to mount the camera is strong velcro or a magnet and the monitor will go on your dash.
This way you can pop the camera on the back of the car to help you couple up or on the back of the caravan to help you see where you are going when reversing.

We often take three grandchildren with us 7,5,4. Never had a problem. Wire is very thin, no chance of damage coming out of the boot. I did not want it to be too complicated. I have a 7 inch screen. Hope you get fixed up.

I've bought a camera etc and am wondering if it is best set up to be on all the time I'm towing, that means I'd have a good view right behind my caravan at all times rather then just when reversing. I thought of wiring it to the side lights rather than the reversing light, I can then switch it on when changing lanes or if unsure if anyone is right up behind me.
Has anyone used a camera when driving? I'd welcome coments from you camera users
------------- We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

Mainly for towing in France because those Frenchies do love hiding right up your rear and appearing out of nowhere
Originally I used it in our previous caravan, camera mounted with HD velcro on rear window sill wired to caravan battery with a wireless sender.
Screen and wireless receiver mounted in a storage locker above speedo in car that can be closed, and wired with cigarette lighter plug so only works when plugged in.
Changed our caravan to a newer model camera mounted the same way but didn't want to start drilling holes to power camera and sender so have used a 3.2Ahr sealed alarm type battery (about £12) which lasted well over 12hrs towing and charges with a smart charger when needed.
Got the camera, screen and senders from Evil-Bay (about £35) but a couple of things to beware of, if mounting inside window steer clear of camera with infra red as it reflects on window also uses a lot more power, I disconnected mine. Also a reverse cameras can make cars behind look further away than they are, I changed mine to a standard 12v CCTV camera, also as I had spare camera mounted one in the back of car that I plug in when not towing.
Overall well pleased with set up for a cheap version and it all gets put away in 2mins when on site and about the same to set up.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
