hi all,
newbie here. i want to change the butane bottle in my van for a propane on but not 100% on how to disconnect the butane bottle from the pigs tail as i've only ever dealt with propane. has anyone got any links or can talk me through what i need to do as i cant find any isolation on the bottle itself.

Remove the regulator from the hose and attach the correct regulator for the propane.

What sized bottle are you using?

With some butane bottles there is no way to switch off the gas apart from using the regulator. If you take the regulator off then the gas stops. There is often a small plastic part on the regulator that switches off the gas if turned part way and unclips the regulator if turned further. It is unlike butane that has an easy to use control on the bottle. You can look at the Calor page for some advice.

-------------
We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

you need to remember that you turn nut on the bottle clockwise to remove.
gas bottle threads are opposite to normal threads.
anti-clockwise to tighten.
clockwise to remove.

Browny2004, it would help if you could clarify the brand, type and size of the cylinder you are trying to disconnect, and whether the regulator is fitted directly to the cylinder or via a high-pressure "pigtail" hose to a permanently fitted "bulkhead" regulator in the back of the gas locker.

Corni's advice above is correct for screw-in/on Calor and Flogas ones which probably also have a hand-turned tap (clockwise to close before disconnecting), for example, but the Campingaz refillable cylinders have a clockwise cylinder-to-regulator threaded connection, and no manual valve, as the valve inside the cylinder should close on removal of the regulator.

Is it an actual regulator on the cylinder, or an adaptor similar to this?

Either way, the Calor page linked by John4703 advises      "Turn the regulator switch clockwise to the off position. If the flame doesn’t go out, leave the appliance alight and contact the Calor Gas Emergency Service number on 08457 444 999
"Replace the orange safety cap onto the empty bottle valve"
