I am new to touring and have a week booked in Pembrokeshire in August. I have read lots of forums about the best route to take and am torn between the longer route (motorway) versus the more direct route using A roads.

I keep weighing up my options like not wanting to drive on Motorways as I am not that confident on Motorways but know they have regular service areas. (We will need a few stops as we are taking the two young puppies with us.)

On the other hand most forums recommend the A roads but fail to mention rest stops along the way - which is putting me off going that way.Help!!

How can I find out places to stop on the A roads (small private service areas and / or lay-by stops along the way.

If we take A roads I was planning on taking A483 from Chester to Newtown - then either the road to Builth Well (using A470) or out to the coast to Aberystwyth and down to Cardigan - but not knowing where we can pull off the road and rest is bothering me.....does anyone know how i can find out where the rest areas may be on this route?

Otherwise I will have to go motorway as I can then plan my stops.

we travel wrexham to tenby/saundersfoot and use the a483 to newtown, llanidloes, llangurig and down to builth wells. stop at builth wells (car park with toilets by the river) but have to go through one way system in town to get to it. They down to llandovery, carmarthen and on to tenby. New road layouts en route so improved journey time.

As a local to the Newtown area.

The best road to take south of Newtown is the road towards Caersws, not the one that goes to Llandrindod. You then join the A470 passing Llanidloes. If you are not confident towing then continue to Builth and then take the road to Llandovery, Llandeilo and Carmarthen, and then the road west to Tenby. There are plenty of places to stop along this route to exercise dogs and yourselves.

The coast road south of Aberystwyth can be quite slow and narrow in some of the villages, and can get quite congested at times. It would not be the way I would choose to go.

I'd agree about not using coast road south of Aberystwyth, it's not a good one for towing a caravan.

Thanks to all who offered advice. We took your advice - and stopped in Builth Wells, Via A470 route. Great drive down to the coast. Once again thanks for the great advice. Happy holipops
