Hi everyone,

I'm new to caravanning I own a 2005 ace award night star, the hot water heater is a truma us 103, everytine I go to use the water the taps splutter so I have to clear the air out and then turn the boiler on, I don't know what to do.
overnight i prime the hot water I then have to redo this again in the morning like the water is running back out and airs getting in. The caravan I believe wasn't looked after at all.

I have to make sure now I turn the water heater off when not using as I had a near miss of it frying the element.

Thank you for reading.

sounds like your one way valve is stuck, or it could simply be the o ring on your water pump but, first when you say you are priming the taps what exactly are you doing?

when you arrive on site you need to flick the yellow tap for draining the water so its in the closed position, then with your full water barrel and pump connected, go to the furthest hot tap away from the inlet, normally your shower and open that until water runs out smoothly, then do the bathroom sink hot tap and then your kitchen one, do the same next with the cold water. only then can you turn the boiler on, if its still leaking water back then its either your one way valve of the o ring on the pump connection

oh and its a good habit to get into of turning the boiler off when your not using it, so after the dishes are done at night, turn on first thing in the morning til showers and breakfast are done then off again till tea time

Welcome to the forum.
It sounds to me like your non-return valve (where ever it is, in-line or part of the bulkhead input assembly) is faulty. Most probably it has a little bit of detritus jammed in the valve so that over time, water is syphoning back down into the aquaroll. A clue to this is the hot water over time, heats the water inlet pipe up as if flows back and so feels warm to the touch.

Dave.

Ahh, I shall investigate is the non return valve the yellow tap on the cold pipe or is there also one on the red hot pipe, by priming the water I mean I have to open the hot tap and it splutters for a while before it runs just water and no air, I am having to do this after say 3 hours or so.

I now make sure that I'm switching off the water heater as I thought over night that I had melted the electric heater inside it. I am currently staying at a school working but using the new caravan on site but will be taking it on holiday at the end of the 6 weeks.

I didn't imagine I would have this kind of trouble as now I've also noticed my shower tray / shower waste is leaking and water runs in the kitchen so I have another job to do.

Thank you for the assistance I will investigate further.

Oliver

Thank you for the help as I now need to solve why my shower tray is leaking...

No problem, that's what forums were made for, helping each other.
Yes, that's the NRV, you could have removed it and tried blowing through it, you should only be able to successfully blow it one way. You may even see gunge inside it.

Most shower tray leaks come from the tray cracking, especially around the drain hole or the raised ridges which have no support underneath and therefore flex too much. That's what happenerd to mine and as a new one is nearly £550, so I painted it with specialist flexible paint for shower trays.

Dave.

The blue pipe around the NRV looks like it may not be draining fully when the yellow drain valve is opened. If so, over winter, that little bit of water can freeze and damage the NRV.

Hi folks OK, I have taken the nrv off and couldn't seem to blow through it but I'm currently waiting on a spare, I have tryed the the yellow switch and also flicked it back down but now I can't get any water to travel when I turn the hot taps on at all, I'm not sure what to do I've tried 2 different water pumps but no water or air leaves the hot side taps any ideas what I should do, I'm starting to loose my s**t with this caravan water system

Just a quick thought could the Nrv be completely knackered and not letting water pass at all now? I get cold water fine, when I hold the yellow switch up I don't think I get any water come out

A lot of caravanning is a learning curve and we all have them sort of days.

It should be possible to blow through the NRV one way but it could be knackered as you suggest. You could always by-pass it and see if the spluttering stops. It won't last long for as soon as the pump stops the water will flow back, but it should give you an indication that it will work when you get the new one.

Once the system is full you can check the valve by putting the outside water pump into a small container to see if its returning water

In terms of your shower tray, check the sealant is not cracked. On our last caravan, the sealant dried and pulled away from the side letting water down under the tray. The tray might just need to be resealed with some standard bathroom sealant.
