After a very wet Saturday (and lots of sand!) I struggled to keep the caravan carpets clean. I put down some plastic matting and I Hoover through but obviously the carpets are now somewhat e stained. What do other people use to keep their caravan carpets clean and also, at end of season, does anyone know somewhere that would clean 3 loose fitting caravan carpets? Thank you!

my van has vinyl "fake wood" sticky backed planking and a carpet runner.. the type used for hall ways..

to me a fitted carpet would be nothing but a pain and look shabby in no time.. keeping a fitted carpet clean would be more trouble than its worth..

my carpet runner is only about six week old and already shows sign of use.. but when it get too shabby it will get replace with a new one.. the vinyl planking should last for years..

fancy carpets in caravans just do not seem a clever idea to me..

thanks kirsten..

how to clean dirty carpets.. the dirt has to be removed from the carpet.. wetting and scrubbing dosnt do this it just moves the dirt around but still leaves it in the carpet..

first violently vacuum and bash..:) this gets rid of some of the loose dirt..

then wet and scrub.. using an old towel scrub with the towel after the wetting and brush scrubbing.. soon the towel will start to look filthy.. this is good (not for the towel) but it means dirt is being moved from the carpet into the towel.. keep at it (wetting and scrubbing) until the towel stops getting dirtier.. this means the towel has absorbed most of the dirt from the carpet.. if the towel gets too dirty you need another one..

chuck the towel into the washing machine and be surprised how clean it comes out.. he he..

i dont like cleaning carpets but the method i have just described works well.. if the carpet cant stand getting wet all is lost.. he he

trog

ps.. i would just use warm soapy water and washing up liquid.. near the end (when its clean) use clear water a bit like the rinse cycle on a washing machine.. this get rid of the washing up liquid.. its hands and knees job but it works..

I keep my caravan carpet spotlessly clean in all weathers. I leave it in the bag it came in and store it in the back bedroom cupboard.
The vinyl flooring is much more suitable for a caravan and the aproximately 4Kg saved is useful for more neccesary equipment

Like above we only have small carpet strip between front lounge which we can remove in bad weather and much prefer the easy wipe an sweep clean vinyl floor (bamboo effect apparently!)

For warm sandy climes we often go to in summer this is even more of a bonus as floor stays cleaner and cooler underfoot

As above we have woodgrain vinyl and a door mat and a runner so easy to keep clean I found the carpet I wanted had it cut to size and bound.

We only have carpet in the living area(front of the van) the other bits are rolled up,and put in the loft. I like being able to sweep and mop the floor and this way, my caravan is cosy where it needs to be and practical in the most trafficked parts. With 3 kids and 2 dogs, it's kind of necessary! 😄

To my mind carpet in a caravan doesn't make any sense at all. We always changed to vinyl. It's so much easier.
