I am heading for the Caravan Club site at Hawes coming up the M6. The advice from CC is to avoid J37 via Sedburgh as it is narrow and difficult and use J36 instead via Ingleton, however the last time I tried that the road from Ingleton to Hawes was very unpleasant itself.
Has anyone experience of towing to Hawes from J37? and is it to be avoided or not? please
i dont think there will be anything other than narrow and scenic.. you are heading into the centre of the yorkshire dales.. i enjoy those roads but i am not towing a monster sized caravan..
We are staying at hawes for a few nights after a couple of nights at the CC site at blackpool and I was going to use junction 37 a684 and then come back to york on that road.
Once in Hawes, id try the Bainbridge Ings site above the village instead. The CC site looks depressing to me, and has zero views. I dont think theres a lot to choose as regards 'suitable roads' over that way, as they all have narrow bits here and there. Just watch for the sheep running across you.
I went the J37 to Sedbergh route last year and wasn't very keen on the Sedbergh Road, even in my campervan. Looking at Google maps I might try J34 this year, seems it might be a bit quicker than J36.
Remember, theres delivery trucks, milk tankers and livestock wagons travel those roads every day - vehicles far bigger than your average caravan. If they can get through, so can you. Nothing to worry about.

Unless you met them coming the other way !.
On my first trip to Hawes I came from Penrith- a nightmare !. A local who saw us told me that he had never seen a caravan come that way before !.
Last year on leaving the Conniston site I met a tourist coach at a particularly narrow section with high hedges on each side. Resulted in my caravan getting scratched along the nearside whilst negotiating past.
Use J34 and head to Ingleton, the Sedbergh road is a bit tight and twisty. Using J36 is a long way round and the road is no better. The road from Ingleton to Hawes is the way a wagon would go so is no problem with a caravan but as commented before just watch out for sheep.
there is a snag with going the way a wagon would go.. you may encounter lots of wagons.. in many ways its as much about the traffic on a road as the road itself..
i speak as someone who has criss crossed the dales with a van on the back.. the traffic you meet on the way is more of a problem than the road..
I handnt seen the cc route suggestion. Assumed a red A road better than a yellow B road! Will follow cc route. Not sure to come back to York a684 way or go down to a65.
I live 5 minutes away from Ingleton. Your best route is jct 34, A683 at T junction turn right on A65 to Ingleton, then turn left in Ingleton onto B6255 straight through to Hawes. There is an alternative route which is jct 34, A683, A687,A65 then B6255. Although this is a quicker route, the A687 is quite narrow and does have a lot of lorries, milk tankers etc on it which do struggle to get past each other. The B6255 Ingleton to Hawes road is a lovely road which we have travelled many times both with and without the caravan so you shouldn't have any problems with it.
