dont use silicon,i would say silkoflex (not sure if ive spelt it right) or there is some stuff looks like blue tack and comes in different widths but i cant remember the name,that is the stuff most things are sealed with such as water inlet and gas vent ect.
Stickyflex - oops sorry, I meant sikaflex is the one most caravaners use, simply because it's flexible when dry. It makes a helluva mess, so use it sparingly, use gloves to apply and wipe any off anywhere you don't want it to be as soon as possible. Oh, and wear old clothes, it's hard to get off both clothing and skin!
Is your roof vent leaking, or have you fitted a new one? Just curious!

Can you tell me why not use silicon only we have just used around our awning rail + bottom rails on the side of the caravan from B&Q. EVO-STIK multipurpose clear inside and outside waterproof that has silicon on the label.
I would agree, dont use silicon sealer. it will work as a temporary measure but wont last.
For a permanent repair have a look at Jeff's post above and have a look at this VIDEO.
looks easy to do but note all the removal and cleaning etc has been removed from the video to show the basic fitting,
I dont think it would be quite as easy if your unit is well stuck down but if its leaking have a go.
I don't know if its leaking,its a rapido fold up and when i folded it I could see the vent and around it looks like something may be starting to lift around the edges

well not 100% sure but i know someone who works in a caravan repair shop and he said not to use it,I think it wont with stand the weather and uv and constant movement of the expansion and contraction of the bodywork,plus you try and remove it from the alloy.Its a caravan,not a kitchen sink
Hi, silicon will peel away in no time and it leaves a residue behind that prevents other sealants sticking and making a good seal even silicon. but be careful what you seal with sikaflex as its a very good sealant/adhesive. you may want to remove what you seal ie. fridge vents/lights etc
Any idea how we can now get this silicone off and get the sikaflex on it was done last week so already probably hard.
Its all around the awning rail top and bottom. Plus the little rail at the bottom and around some of the top of a window. Plus the top guttering above the front windows. Advice please we want to get this done asap before the weather breaks for the worse and for weeks.
Also Bob is 78 and not too fit and I can only do it for my wheelchair.
Hi, try scraping away lightly then use meths it mat come away easily once you get it started. there is a product called something like silicon eater that removes silicon, never tried it but it may need care if used on a caravan. don't panic if its fresh silicon will be ok for a while and will peel away easier when its old

Many thanks we ill move on this asap weather permitting problem is van is in storage 30 mile away from us. So have to get round M25 + M23 before we leave motorways behind for another 10 miles. aagh!!
Chrissie unless Bob has took the rails off to reseal them with silicone..which i doubt very much,Just leave them alone.All you have done is just ran silicone along the edge of the rails which will do no harm,not stuck the actual rail down with the stuff..
