With the weather at the moment being a little stormy and lots of people out there camping and caravanning I just wondered if anyone has ever had there unit hit by lightning and what damage did it do?
were away in a couple of weeks and have had storms in the past but never been hit, however I've always wondered what would happen if we were.
can't help with the lightening scenario, we've been camping and storms have blew up ,thankfully we've never been hit, worst that's ever happened to us was when we were on a tin tent trip and a hail storm hit, the roof on our old tin tent looked like a golf ball ,thankfully though the skin wasn't punctured so stayed water tight
------------- no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far

its going back a few years this but we were going to bed one night it was thundering.. there was a very very load bang just about the time we were climbing into bed..
i looked out the widow expecting to see a roof on fire.. but nothing appeared to be amiss.. in the morning nobody had a working TV.. my house had a communal aerial which fed a dozen or so other houses.. it was on the outside wall not far away from where we were getting into bed.. hence the very loud bang..
the aerial was mains amplified which probably saved our house from getting a big hole in the wall..
the lightening strike jumped across the immersion heater connection in our bedroom.. it earthed off nicely though the water pipes.. i took the cover off and there was a blackened charged mark from the live connection to the earth connection.. it blew the aerial amplifier and everyone's TV got fried but no other signs of damage..
when it hits close there is no rumbling just a bloody great bang.. he he
The worst storm that we were ever in was on a CC rally at Elvastion castle. It was the day they predicted armourgeden, and the world to end. It started around 3pm in the afternoon and carried on for about two hours with no let up. It struck one of the caravan's awnings on the rally field and took out one of the steam engines over on the display arena.
At the height of the storm, the worst thing was the sound of people screaming, believing that the end of the world had truely begun. We had our two young daughters with us at the time, and they were very frightened by this indeed. The only thing we could do was to close all the blinds to stop them witnessing the intense lightening and sheer panic taking place outside. We switched all our electrics off on the zig panel and turned our gas off at the bottle, there wasnt much we could do about the noise as it was so loud, and even my husband whos used to working out in all weathers, admitted that he was scared.
By the end of the storm, the rally field was 2inches deep in water, and a few caravans had suffered water damage from the extreme force of the rain.
