If you have a mobile phone contract with unlimited data you can sometimes tether from that phone. My wife has an iPhone on o2 with unlimited data I tether from that with my wifi only iPad what it does is turn my wives phone into a hotspot and I tether using Bluetooth and hey presto I can also surf the web. Please note that some networks charge for this service. if you have the correct equipment there are videos on youtube that show you how to tether. Sorry for going on . Hope this can help you .Cheers. Alex
I have a Kindle Fire HD. It has wifi, but there is no dongle or USP port/plug, just a HDMI output. Unless you are right on top of a wifi signal, it's very very slow.
I don't know if they have rectified this omission with the latest Kindle.
I'm on 02 and get so much free internet access a month, but I haven't tried tethering it to the Kindle as I don't know how.
We tether my iPad and OH's kindle fire to my iPhone with no issues, and up until a few months ago used a BlackBerry as personal hotspot to tether to before I changed to iPhone. I didn't buy the internet enabled fire as didn't seem worth it when I have unlimited wifi on phone. Have also used a 3 broadband dongle I have when I knew a certain site does not have good enough signal for phone and no issues there either.

To read books and play games ,put on at home you dont need Wi-Fi ,just the kindle or tablet .To download any other books while away or games or surf the internet ,then you need wi-fi ,i use the data allowace on my phone to act as a portable hotspot, making my phone into a modem ,works excellent when i need wi-fi, have you considered the samsung galaxy tablets , cheaper than a kindle and far better performance , use mine for reading using Kindle app and Kobo app ,also surfing the net, emails etc and games
I've got a Paperwhite 3G Kindle. It's great, I can download the newspaper in the morning and even look at the internet (although it is in monochrome). Any of the Kindle range can be used independent of the internet. It's just if you wish to download new material, then the 3G is the way to go. The kindle 3G costs no more than the purchase price, so effectively, free internet!

Sorry I`ve took so long to respond. My emails were going to strange places . . . I`m grateful for all your help and am just realising the thing is not a computer. But it was the missus who wanted it! She got a Nexus 7. . . . .
