Firstly let me apologize as I am sure this is a constant question about this subject,

I passed my test after 1997 so don't have the B+E cat on my license

I HAVE NO CARAVAN EXPERIENCE all my Hols were under canvas

I would just like to make sure I am legal,

I recently purchased a 1994 Avondale Argos checking I think the MIRO weight is 764kg and the MAM is 950kg correct me if I am wrong.

My car is a 56 Kia Sedona 2.9 TS

I got this info off a website
Kerb weight: 2168 kg's
Un-braked Manufacturers towing capacity: 750 kg's
Braked Manufacturers towing capacity: 2000 kg's

75% of Kerb weight: 1626 kgs
85% of Kerb weight: 1842.8 kgs
95% of Kerb weight: 2059.6 kgs

Am I legal to tow this van with this car and secondly are there any places around the Warrington area to teach you how to tow safely?

Any other advice or info you could offer would be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks
Haich

The issue you have is not the kerbweight but the vehicles gross laden weight.

Cars gross laden weight + caravans gross laden weight = ???

It must be less than 3500kg.

I think with a kerbweight of 2168kg your going to be over.
Unless the cars max loading limit is under 382kg. Doubtful for such a big car. My mondeo can carry over 500kg.

Check the cars chassis plate. You will have 2 axle weights something like 1200 - 1500kg front /rear axle then a GVW Gross vehicle weight.

Gross vehicle weight + gross caravan weight needs to be under 3500kg.

Gross weight of your car is 2900kg so add that to caravan gross weight 950kg = 3850kg so you need B+E licence to tow.

4920kg is max gross train weight..ie max allowed weight of car/caravan together.

2920kg is max gross weight of car, ie fully laden weight.

the other 2 figures are maximum allowed weight on each axle.

Its these max gross weights of both car & caravan that you take for licence purposes, loading lightly to get weight of outfit below 3.5t does not make it legal to drive on just B licence.

So you need a caravan with a GROSS LADEN weight of under 580kg. To be legal.

You will either need a smaller car or take the towing test. B+E

just needed it clarifying really quite a mine field when your unsure what your looking for

not bothered about taking the B+E test was more concerned going on the road without ever towing before so was going to do a course either way

so cheers for the help

Be very careful using whattowcar.com

I'm sure it's well-intentioned but it was completely wrong on my car and 'van. Perhaps because it's Dutch based and rules vary by country? Although you'd think being in the EU there wouldn't be any differences.

You can only tow a very small micro caravan or a small trailer with your current car.

You cannot tow the Avondale its too heavy. Takes you over 3500kg.
