Hi just wondering if any one can I have a lunar meteorite 1991. been away at weekend on sunday night I notice the lights go dim and flicker tried to use water nothing there so went out side pump was connected fine the toilet doesn't flush either. Notice the battery level indicator inside was low the casade water heater had green and yellow (which manual says low voltage) went outside to battery to find was red hot and both cables were too so I disconnected it.on return home I put battery cables back on and water heater is solid green(this is ok) but there is still no lights water pump or toilet flush any ideas?

The battery needs fully re-charging to about 13 volts. If it's discharged severely it may not re-charge but you need a voltmeter so you can check the condition of the battery and whether it's holding a charge.

Darren, I am a bit concerned about the battery and cables being hot. That would suggest to me that there is a serious short circuit there somewhere. If you cannot check your wiring yourself, I would find someone who can. Things like lights going dim and other equipment not working could be caused by a dodgy battery, but it's highly unlikely that the wiring would get hot.

It is more likely, in my opinion, that the dud battery is the result of the problem, not the cause of it! I would think that you have an intermittent short circuit, which could cause a fire. The circuit involved is obviously not protected by a fuse, or it would have blown. Get that wiring checked out pronto!

It sounds to me as though the on board charger could be over charging with both battery and leads getting hot, was there a strong acrid smell from the battery area at the time? this would be the battery acid boiling up, if so I would get the charger checked to make sure it is regulated when the battery is fully charged and not continuing to charge, as stated above it could be a fire risk if so, good luck and hopefully your sorted.

Agree with the above post.Get the charger checked or buy a meter and do it yourself.Should be charging at 13.5volts any higher will over charge the battery.

Yes indeed, royh, it could be the charger. I wouldn't have thought the battery and leads would get that hot through overcharging, but it is indeed possible. Certainly worth checking. Very concerned about the fire risk.

Hi did you manage to sort things out? and Colin21 yes the battery can get very hot, my brother had the same issue last year with his van, we switched the power off and took the battery from the van housing and stood it on the floor under the van and even in cool evening air it took 2-3 hours to get back to a normal temp.

Wow! 2 - 3 hours royh! That must have been seriously hot! The first job I had when I left school, decades ago, was building custom-made battery chargers for special industrial applications, and I can honestly say I never encountered that problem to that degree. I am surprised, to say the least, that a charger as small as the ones used in caravans is capable of overcharging to that degree. Oh well, you learn something every day. I will certainly keep a closer eye on my caravan's charging system now.
