Is that the blade type?

 If it is check the that mounting bolts are secure on the a-frame bracket, also make sure the big bolt that holds it into the tow hitch mount is tight.

Other problem could be that the friction pads in the device need changing.

They do make a creaking noise but not normally clonks!

some times they clunk if the caravan when hitched up is not  level to the cars tow ball .
