Hi guys, getting a new company car which will be a pass at estate. I haven't approached the subject of tow bars yet but I notice that on the VW web site they have an optional swivel tow bar which can be ordered with the car. Will this be suitable for all caravan hitches, mine is an old 99 abi sprinter.

I think they will insist it is a vw tow bar.

I too have company VW but had tow bar supplied and fitted by towsure, you need to ensure that you get the correct elec and tow ball for your hitch. I could have opted for either type swivel or fixed i opted for fixed to keep costs down. It cost me 360 quid all up

If you go for the factory fit, then that will up the Tax you pay, so probably best to go for an after fit.

I drive a firms VW Golf, and transfared the towbar from the previous firms car to this current one.

Which means I will have gotten 6 years usage out of the same towbar, so not to bad for original £280 fitting and then £50 transfer, so over 6 years total cost has been £330.

The car is due for change August 2015, so will be getting a Mk7 Golf, and have been told by my towbar fitter that the towbar on my Mk6 will not go onto the new car, which I am not best pleased about, but hey ho.

As already mentioned if you do for an after fit , make sure you get the pukka electrics, specific to the car, also single 13pin is the way forward, twin sockets are so last century these days.

If you are going to have the factory fit towbar make sure its ordered at the same time as the car itself, the swivel fold out towbar is a superb bit of kit and if im right comes with a purpose made rear bumper with removable panel.
they also fit a lever with warning lights in the side panel of the boot, remove the bumper cover, pull the lever and the hitch with electrics built into the hitch swings out
You also get the ecu programed ready to go.
if you order at a later date all the above has to be done after the car has been delivered and that includes some plonker cutting a big ugly hole in your bumper rather than fitting the correct factory part.
Expensive but great bit of kit
if you go ahead with this remember you have to order it at the same time as the car.
Another example is if the criuse control is an extra its double the price if you order it at a later date even though its only a plug in modual
all you will need is a coverter socket for your electrics app £8.
