That does very much depend on the light fitting and the accuracy of the description.
My down-lighters use G4 halogen (example light can face either up or down).

MR16 are a spot-light type bulb and used more for directional reading light use.
Typical MR16 reading light ...

If your down-lighters are a general light and tend to output light in all directions (usually with a semi transparent shade to them), then they will be G4's.
If the fittings are a directional light with a metal enclosure/shade, then probably MR16's.]
