hi, we are buying a citroen xsara picasso 1.6i 16v desire (petrol) this week and we have a 2 berth caravan is this car suitable to tow the caravan with?
thank you in advance
kelly
Ideally your caravan's MTPLM should be 85% of your vehicles KERBWEIGHT but experienced towers can tow at 100% of this figure.
Details of your caravan will aid us in answering your question.
A quick search shows a kerbweight of 1240kg but it has a towing limit of 900kg so as long as the maximum laden weight of your caravan is 900kg or less you will be fine.
Over 900kg = No.
But a more accurate search shows that it is in fact the older model 1.6 8valve that has 900kg tow weight & the newer 1.6i 16v has max tow of 1300kg.
However, in view of the sense of sticking to the 85% ratio 'suggestion' & low torque of 1.6petrol engine a max tow of around 900kg is probably sensible for the car for reasonable road performance.
I cant get in the caravan at the minute to check the paperwork as my husband has the key but after checking similar vans online its looking like the max weight is less than 900kg. the car is a 07 plate and says the max towing weight braked is 1300kg and unbraked 700kg.
thanks for your replies
Watch oiut because some small people carriers give a max tow but qualify it with a max train weight which is the combined weights of car and van. In that case it depends how much weight you iwll have in the csar. With a 2 berth I guess there are only 2 of you so maybe OK
