Just a heads up for all of you planning to visit Derbyshire over the next few weeks, there are massive roadworks taking place on the A38 intersection at Little Eaton island. This is leading to long delays and diversions at times
Sometime through the backroads and city centre.
Traffic is regularly backed up northbound from the junction with the Kingsway McDonalds Island /A52 Ashbourne road, for approx 2miles until clear of Little Eaton. This also effects the junction with the A6 Northbound.
Southbound, the section between Ripley and the Junction with the A6 Derby to Belper road is also badly effected and will have delays and diversions over the next few weeks.
The Derby inner ring road connecting the A52 from the Pentagon Island to the A38 is also suffering regular delays and becomes gridlocked at peak times.
These roadworks are set to continue for several months throughout the summer whilst they build a fly-over to connect both sections of the A38 and take out a major traffic lsland that has bedn a major accident blackspot for many years

Just a further update, more for anyone who may be considering traveling this route overnight, my daughter has just informed me that there will be road and slipway closures from 8pm to 6am in this area over the next few weeks, and the A6/A38 northbound intersection is now closed until further notice.

Yes, I drove through there today on the way to Matlock. It's a real mess. We are off to Teversal next weekend and it's unavoidable from where we are. If we hitch up and leave now, we might be at Teversal by Fri tea time, I reckon....
There have been a few people get caught up in it and either run out of fuel in the long wait, or start suffering from an overheated engine during the 2 mile crawl, then this of course causes further delays for all concerned as they await recovery help.
I wasnt aware that we were having to wait so long for the much needed flyover though, the offending island has a very bad camber on the entrance to Abbey Hill, and not a month goes by without a lorry sheds its load there, and in a couple of inceidents the whole lot has gone over, resulting in fatalities with one lorry falling onto and trapping an awaiting car at the junction.
Its right in my path for accessing the city centre, going into the city is not so bad, l can simply follow the A6, but the return journey becomes gridlocked by traffic trying to avoid the offending area and clogging up the City's one way system. It took me over an hour yesterday to do a journey home that normally takes me 15mins, and even then l used my local knowledge to the full to access all the backroads and shortcuts l knew, l feel sorry for those people who come across it unexpectadly, and may miss important appointments, its also on the route to the Derby Royal hospital for those travelling from the north via Ripley and the surounding area.

Julia, your local knowledge is better than mine. We are coming from Burton to Teversal, best way is up the A38, of course! Can you think of a van-friendly way to avoid the island? I've tried, and I can't!
You could try taking the A50 westbound at Toyota, then the Ashbourne road via Sudbury, continuing straight ahead through Ashbourne, through Hulland Ward, to join the A6 at Belper Mill, then turn right and follow up to the Hurt Arms at Ambergate, turn right again, and keep going straight on until you come to the A38 junction for Ripley, Alfreton, Derby, which is a large island with a flyover carrying the A38, take the Alfreton turning, 1st left, and your back on the A38 heading towards the M1and the Mansfield junction, which should then take you onto your original route to your destination. That way you will avoid the more southern leg of the A38 and the offending island at Little Eaton.

Yes,they seem to be spending lots of time doing not much. I came through there at about 2ish last Sunday - going into the city was fine but coming out the traffic was queued as far as the university! On a Sunday. God knows what rush hour must be like.
Its like it most of the time northbound, a very slow bumper to bumper crawl, and mostly backing up to the university or the A52 Markeaton Island at peak times.
At the moment im accessing the Southbound from the A6, then headding over to the A50/M1 at Toyota Island. Getting to the Derby Royal Hospital is a nightmare, they also have roadworks going on outside the Firestation, spotted an ambulance with blues and twos ablazing get well and truely gridlocked in it outside of the old Kingsway Hospital, just no where for the traffic to go to clear him a path, a complete standstill at rush hour.

Lol, not for my house you dont, I live in Belper, so its a right for me, and turn left at Morrisons island!
Its all the A6, right the way into the city centre if you turn left, including the closed off northbound junction onto the offending A38 at Allestree Abbey hill Island, although the junction here onto the southbound A38 is still open and fairly well running, apart from the rush hour times.
