Hi I'm thinking of buying a walk along hand winch but unsure of what capacity to buy caravan is 900kg but would like one to take up to 1300kg for future in case of upgrade will be pulling caravan over grass
If you need to move a van then get proper motor movers fitted to the caravans wheels.
Expensive but so much better in every way. And easily exchanged from one van to another.
Winch specs are generally pulling rolling loads on the flat. Any sort of slope and you may need a 4 ton winch for a 1300kg van. Even higher if the grass gets soft.
Van is old 1989 so dont want to spend to much there's no slope it's to move it about 40ft across grass to the road as it can get to wet for the car to pull van out onto road ( front wheel drive )

2000kg may not actually do the job. At least 4000kg would be a must i think.
You don't need to lift the caravan in the air!
While I won't comment on the practicalities of using a winch, the size required is one that is enough to overcome the force need to move the caravan. Only if you were trying to move a 1000kg caravan up a cliff would you need a 1000kg winch. The force you need to overcome should be less than 500kg.

I used a 2000kg hand winch to move my 1250kg van and I agree with Grampian91 a complete PITA!
Unless you can securely bolt it down when you try to turn the handle it has a tendency to twist making it extremely difficult to operate.
I used it twice before it found it's place in the shed along with all the rest of the junk I have accumulated.

Put some paving slabs down, or a long piece of carpet.
Seriously, my caravan is 1982, weighs only 650kg fully loaded, and I have fitted a motor mover. I cannot push and shove, I have back problems. Yes, expensive, but no more faffing around.
!00kg will more than handle your van. I've used one for all sorts of jobs including pulling van up a grass slope up kerbs etc. Winch is mounted on a base plate and has a 50mm ball bolted to the plate. Engage the ball into van hitch, run cable out and make fast, possibly to car towball, walk alongside van whilst turning handle.
You certainly don't need 4ton of energy to move a 1ton van on wheels, simple physics..........Mick
Just had a look at the Aldi one 'linked' above. Cable length is less than 3 metre, so would be very awkward to use to drag the van 40feet.
If the op wants a system just for home, a 12v, 2000lb electric winch is available at Amazon for £57 - has 49ft of cable. Reversible and remote control also available.
I used to use something like that Aldi winch to haul broken down vehicles onto a recovery trailer. The ramps were quite steep, and I could pull a Transit van up onto the trailer with that winch.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
