Hi all, I wonder has anyone converted their fluorescent tubes in their caravans to LED lights? I have an 80 Watt roof mounted solar panel which keeps the battery topped up but I want to have less drain on resources by converting to LED. We go to temporary holiday sites a lot where there is no EHU so we need to have a self sufficient setup. I have tried searching but the list comes up blank.

Any advice please?

May be easier adding some LED lights additionally that you can use when not on EHU?

Any lights that are currently halogen capsules (G4 type) for instance can be easily swapped over for LED equivalents. Not sure LED fluorescents exist or at least don't exist enough to make them a commercially viable swap as they won't save enough power to make them desirable i guess

There are very limited T5 tube replacement LED's, example shown here at Ledison. These include an entire fitting, but the lamps can be used on 12v by modification of the fitting.

There are also a few other threads on this forum whereby some users have retro-fitted self adhesive LED strips into the existing tube fitting. There's a ballast in the fitting that needs removal/bypassing too.

You need to be a little careful with LEDs. The LEDs are very bright and can hurt your eyes if the glare is not properly controlled.

Also, they are very directional. To get a pleasant light for an interior, you need light on the ceiling and walls as well as on what you are doing.

When using LEDs for commercial lighting in buildings, we always use fittings specifically designed for the LEDs. In fact they come as a complete package.

if your into diy you can buy LEDs on a roll and cut them to size to fit inside your 12 volt light fittings or anywhere you like to fit them
have a look on you tube loads of ideas there.
24 LED g10 are being sold for £2.99 each at homebargains at the moment, mains powered though.

I've done this. Cheap and easy. Total wattage for each of my lights is 5W vs 18W and easily twice the light output.

Or if you're a cheapskate like me you could just buy some Rolson led lights and use them instead. Also very handy if battery power gets too low.
