I have a truma 3002 auto fire its lights up ok on gas but will not keep on when I let go of the igniter tried holding it down for 10 minutes but still goes out gas supply no problem (cooker works fine) any ideas anyone

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Sounds like the "flame failure" system is at fault. Time to talk to Gary of Arc-system.

I have never needed to replace one on Truma "S" series but have on a gas hob.

EDIT; it is not necessarily going to be that component of the flame failure system that has failed but in my book worth a try.

As as above, I think it will be the thermocouple and also as above not done one on the heater but I have on a gas hob and also on my old central heating boiler in the house. Easy job IF you can get at it.

It is looking like the thermocouple (cost about £12) to me reading up about it just does not look a nice job can anyone advise how to do it

I am not sure that you are supposed to even try, on a domestic boiler or other gas device you need a gas safe registration to mess with gas appliances.

For touring caravans you do not need to be gas safe registered to work on gas. I have acops gas certification and am only working towards gas safe to get into the static caravan area of the job.
However, I would like to point out that if you are unsure then get someone in to do it. I hear of many diy gas jobs that are potentially life threatening. You wouldnt mess with your home system yet people are happy to mess with their caravan which in comparison is a confined area that is just as dangerous.

Regarding your thermocouple the fire needs to come out, meaning gas disconnected and re connected. Therefore a gas tightness test should be carried out. A squirt of fairy liquid is not a safe test and can actually damage connections.

A bit confused as to how Fairy liquid can 'damage' the connection.

The elements in the liquid can cause corrosion of the connections.Also
oil based solutions, or those containing fatty acids, can ignite if they come in contact with oxygen.  For this reason soapy water or washing up liquid must not be used

My problem is I don't think it is the thermocouple, more likely to be something wrong with the pilot flame than the thermocouple itself.
Also, the thermocouple has a 'cold' end that screws into the bottom of the gas valve, it's an 8mm brass nut, check this is clean and nipped up tight as dirty/loose it won't be making a good electrical connection.

As for changing, as I said very much doubt it needs changing, so 'seeing' what actually is wrong requires someone familiar with what their looking at, as well as how it all comes apart and goes back together exactly how it is supposed too, including the flue seal?!

As for fairy liquid, problem with this again is how it's used, but used right I defy any posh/expensive micro bubble leak detector to find a leak any better than it can.
Same as using a naked flame, it's not so much why you might think?, no, it's because it won't find a tiny leak rather than it obviously causing a big bang from a larger leak!!

When trying your heater is it very windy ? There is a bit in the manual that recommends the use of an AKV cowl extension (part number 30010-208000) if the heater keeps going out in extremly windy locations, only mention this because of the weather we are experiencing at the moment.

How things change.

30 years ago a squirt of soapy water WAS the test for gas soundness among 99% of gas workers, with no known 'after effects'.
When you weigh up not wiping old flux off etc. that CAN eat through pipework, i would think using a bit of soapy water comes well down the list of 'unsafe practices'.

But, rooles is rooles, and where would we be without them - apart from France.
