just had the van service, all ok, phew, apart from a small section of delamination which is being sorted this week. They have said it would be a good idea to change the water filter. We don't drink water through the system only for washing and cooking. What is the effect on the system if we don't change the filter.

Even if only washing and cooking it is a good idea to replace the filter. Do this after you have flushed and sterilised the water system. Useful info from the Caravan Club
A filter will not stop you getting ill if your system has not been sterilized properly. To me they are a waste of money even though they do take some taint out of water. To save buying them, hold it in your hand with the big end and turn the rest, this will let you take out the bag of charcoal thats if you dont want filtered water.
Have to agree with Jeff's Post on that. Cleaning and sterilising the system and water barrels is more important.
Afterall when have you seen a Camp site clean their water system? We clean the taps in our vans but get the water from one in the middle of a field afterall !! LOL
Useful for what they are but i wouldnt loose sleep over it.
I'm just wondering if I am a bit weird. I drink the water out of my caravan tap, I use the built in heating system rather than a fan heater or oil filled radiator, I wee in the toilet, I use the shower and use normal bedding not a sleeping bah or duvalay
Let me know if you need any I got some spare ones not yet been worn ok
Do you just use the heating on its own then? You need to meet my wife, when they recently upgraded the Hookup points on our site to 16A my wife went and bought another fan heater just to make up the difference and use the extra few Amps LOL

Ditto.
I really cannot understand the need for all this fuss and palaver over what is basically the same water you drink at home!
I would be more worried about having an old filter than no filter. To me an old filter is a great place for bacteria as it retains the moisture even after the system is drained down. As Jeff says above simply use the screw cap off the old Crystal type filters or with the Ultraflow simply remove the filter and put the blue cap back on. I do use the filter on one site I visit where the water is from a borehole and it tends to have a high sediment content which the filter removes.
