Hi.
I have never dealt with a dealer before,so Can anyone tell me how to approach one with a view to part exchanging my 'van for a newer one,do you have to physically tow your van to their premises for inspection and valuing or, what else do you do.
The reason I ask is because I have been on two dealers websites where they give you the opportunity to send the details for valuation, one was to part/ex my van for one costing 12000,(two e mails)and the other advertised asking for vans younger then the year 2000 against one of theirs that I liked the look of,(mine is 2007)neither have responded to my e mails, both have a decent reputation, so I am very disappointed in their lack of a response. Both are situated some distance from me,so I'm trying to get an approx value to avoid a wasted journey,
Has anyone else attempted to value a 'van this way,if so what was your experience.
This is the reason i always deal with my local dealer. Before i enter any sale agreement i get him to come to my house and survey van and give me a guaranteed exchange price. When dealing distantly unless you take the van to get a p/x price, there is always the risk of when you do take it to collect new van, something is found to give dealer a reason to lower the p/x that was previously offered.
The only sure way of getting a firm valuation is to arrange to take your 'van to the dealer, any distance valuation is subject to them seeing caravan & you can guarantee they will find faults & knock down price. Thats how the system works. If they have not responded to your emails they probably have enough trade ins at the moment or they have enough business coming through the door.
As pointed out, if you can use a dealer near to you it is far easier to go back for warranty work & also they will know that you are close enough to easily come back to them if the caravan has faults.
I've always gone to the local dealer but not taken the PX van in. Just told them what it is. They said what it was worth and I've done a deal based on that.
When I've subsequently gone back to collect the new van there has never been any problem. You have to be honest and if there is a major problem you have to say but mine were all OK.
Each time they gave me a value which I could give them as extra money if I sold it privately in the meantime. For instance, £2200 PX or £1700 cash.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Thank you for the replies, much appreciated.
I have tried my local dealers but they haven't got the make of van I want,(I am an avid fan of Adrias)so it looks as though I need to look at caravan sites close to Adria dealers for a weekend shopping trip and take it from there.
I also appreciate the fact that dealers may not be taking part/ex's or have a busy customer base but, call me old fashioned,I think it common courtesy to reply to an enquiry, even if it's in the negative.
I personally have never been chipped on the price offered on a trade in on the 5 vans that I have traded in as long as the van is as you have described it and the dealer is honest then there should be no problems.
