Hi all, on Monday (tomorrow). We are meeting with the seller of our 2011 Luner Clubman SI. We haven't seen it yet, but have every confidence in the couple and everything they say about it, complete with all the accessories. We're meeting in Lyme Regis where they will take the caravan for us to see. They have a static there. This will make it only about 50 miles away. I'll let you know more when we have it home. We are a retired couple my husband will be 72 in December. We're hoping that this will make our lives more interesting.
Rosemary and Joe.
I hope all goes well. As they are not showing you the van at home, I would ask for ID and check the address. Also check this site http://www.cris.co.uk/ The cris number is etched into the windows and is unique to each caravan. Cris will tell you the make and model of the van and whether it has been stolen or not.
We all like to trust folks but unless you know these people really well it will be better to be safe than sorry.
I hope the caravan is what you want and that you both have many happy years touring.
KM

I presume you know what to look out for when buying a caravan?

When we bought our second hand swift (which we love) I bought a damp meter and stuck it in some places I wasn't sure what readings I should have got. it would seem 20% or greater there is a problem...
With hindsight I could have done more. Not only use a damp meter but open the top cupboards and press the rear walls with your fingers quite firmly all along the top of the wall just below the ceiling. If there is any long term damp then chances are the walls will feel spongy when pressed. You can follow the sponginess down the wall and see how far it goes and also along the walls left to right.
If there is damp (and you might not even smell it) you can negotiate some more money off... Or just accept it and deal with it. We have sealed our leaks for now and will deal with it later in the year. (We only paid £1500 for our "Betsy")
Try and see all of the equipment "In action" Water pump, Gas heater etc.
If you re-contact the CRIS registration I think you will find that they are linked to HPI to which is the company that should be able to tell you if there is any finance outstanding but there may be a fee applicable for the search. That's the one reason why I never buy privately and always purchase from a dealer because they will conduct all the necessary legal checks prior to the sale as buying privately may be a better deal but can be a risky game if anything does go wrong so do all the neccessary checks before you part with any cash.
Meeting a private buyer away from their home is always a bit suspect. All good advice so far about ID, title, HPI and especially damp.
If you don't know these people keep your cash secure until ideally the van is attached to your car but certainly off theirs.
Also a a good idea to get their vehicle reg. and verify their ownership of the static.
Good luck with your new venture. Hope all goes well with the hand over. I know people on here are advising caution, probably 99% of the time sellers are genuine and can be trusted, but you can't be too careful with your hard earned cash. Villains often appear genuine and helpful too! Follow sensible precautions as advised and you won't go far wrong.
Then post all about it on here. We are waiting.........
a cris check will tell you if there is any outstanding finance on the van... so you sohuld be ok on that point if you have done the check as you state....
